Syncsort targets mainframe data with enhanced Hadoop ETL tool

Hadoop could be displacing legacy analytics infrastructure at an even faster rate than it does now if not for the difficulty of importing information from outmoded data management systems. As a rule of thumb, the older the platform, the more time-consuming the chore becomes. Syncsort Inc. wants to clear the bottleneck for organizations that still have information locked away in big iron with a new iteration of its DMX-h migration tool that is rolling out this morning.

The release brings a bulk loading feature called Data Funnel that promises to greatly speed up the process of extracting records from DB2, the relational store that IBM Corp. offers along with its System z mainframes. Whereas Syncsort’s customers could previously only move information to Hadoop or Spark one database table at a time, DMX-h now provides the ability to shift hundreds in a single operation. The company says that the feature not only reduces transfer times but also makes the task much less tedious for the administrators in charge of the migration.

The process can be further streamlined using the new data loading option that has been added in conjunction. DMX-h no longer requires information from DB2 to be converted into a format that Hadoop and Spark can natively ingest before performing a transfer, which removes one of the most time-consuming tasks involved in performing such migrations. Keeping the data in its original form has the added benefit of preserving certain contextual details that can be important for auditing.

While the ability to trace inaccuracies and compliance violations back to the source is important in every analytics environment, it’s outright critical for the heavily regulated organizations that constitute the majority of the System Z customer base. IBM’s mainframe clients typically use their deployments to process sensitive data such as financial transactions and patient records that have to be closely monitored at all times.
