Twitter sets sights on game devs by offering full Unity support for Fabric

Mobile game developers will now have a few more tools at their disposal, as Twitter Inc. announced today that its development platform, Fabric, now offers full support for the popular Unity 5 game engine.

“For years, Twitter has helped game developers deliver amazing experiences through rich content and app distribution tools that drive discovery and conversation about your content,” Hemal Shah, product manager at Twitter, wrote in a blog post. “Within the Fabric team, we want to double down on that support, and make it even easier to help you build, distribute, and monetize amazing games with best-in-class tools.”

Fabric is a modular development platform that combines several tools owned by Twitter under one roof, including Crashlytics, Answers, MoPub, Digits, and of course Twitter itself.

Shah said that the new Unity integration will allow game developers to import Fabric’s tools directly into Unity’s integrated development environment (IDE).

“We crafted a streamlined onboarding and update experience through one unified Unity plugin that would give you time back each week to focus on building your game,” Shah said.

Ok, but what can it do?

Beyond all of the marketing speak about empowering game developers to do whatever, there are a few ways that Fabric could actually be useful for mobile game developers, not the least of which is the ability to see when any catastrophic errors occur in a game thanks to reports from Crashlytics.

Shah also noted that Fabric can give Unity developers the ability to analyze user behaviors in their games using Answers, a mobile analytics tool that also integrates with Crashlytics. Answers can provide insights into useful metrics such as average play time, how often users make in-app purchases, and more.

Through Digits, developers can also allow players to log in to a game using their Twitter handle, and the integration with Twitter itself can allow players to send tweets from within the game whenever they hit certain milestone.

Great news for mobile game players who hate their Twitter followers.
