Skype for Web gets an update: How to make calls, receive notifications, add non-users to a chat, more

A web version of Skype was introduced last year, allowing you to access your Skype conversations from any computer without first having to install the desktop app.

To align Skype for Web with the existing mobile and desktop versions, the web version has received four updates, including the ability to make phone calls, receive notifications, invite non-Skype users to a chat and the functionality to watch YouTube videos directly from Skype.

Here’s a look at the new features on Skype for Web and how to use them. To try out the new features sign into Skype for Web if you are an existing user, or create an account.

Make international calls directly from Skype for Web

Skype for Web - calls

Skype offers low rates for local and international calls to mobile phones and landlines, and now the company has bought the feature to Skype for Web.

Tip: To make calls you will need either a Skype Unlimited World subscription or Skype credit.

Sign into Skype for Web > click the phone calls tab > select the country you are phoning > type in the landline or mobile number > click dial.

Add anyone to the conversation

Last year Skype introduced a new feature for Skype for Windows desktop that allows you to add anyone to a Skype chat regardless of whether they have a Skype account. The feature is now available on Skype for Web.

Start a new conversation by pressing +New > click Share conversation > you will get a unique URL that you can share with anyone via email, messaging apps or social media.

When the recipient receives the link, they simply click it and if they do not have a Skype account they can simply join the conversation as a guest on Skype for Web.

With the likes of competitors like Slack introducing the ability to make phone calls directly from its app, it is important that Skype remains relevant for both users and non-users.

Watch YouTube videos directly from Skype

If your friend sends you a YouTube link during your Skype conversation, you can now watch it directly in Skype for Web and don’t have to open a new browser window.

Simply click the YouTube video link > press play and watch the video directly on Skype for Web.

You will have access to all the normal YouTube controls, including volume and full-screen.

This new feature follows Skype improving the overall way URLs appear in Skype for Web, with the addition of an image from the selected web page.

Never miss out

Skype for Web will alert you with notifications to ensure you never miss out on any of your conversations or phone calls.

To receive notifications, you need to make sure you are signed into Skype for Web. Regardless of whether you are in another app or browser tab, Skype for Web will alert you for any calls or conversations.
