Now you can take a 360-degree virtual tour of Google’s data center

Google’s data centers are among the biggest, most complicated, and sophisticated in the world. But they’re also among the most secure, which means only a few select Google employees ever get a chance to see them up close.

Until now.

As of today, it’s now possible for anyone to take a look inside the inner workings of Google, via a new 360-degree video tour of one of its data center facilities. Launched at its Google Cloud Platform Next event, the 360-degree video tour comes as Google makes a renewed bid for the enterprise.

Yesterday saw several of Google’s top officials take to the stage in an effort to convince the industry that it’s not just deadly serious about the enterprise cloud, but actually wants to lead the space, which means surpassing the likes of Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure, both of which have a substantial lead over Google at present.

As if to hammer home how serious it is, Google also announced plans to build two new data centers in Oregon and Tokyo, along with the launch of ten more between now and the end of 2017.

Google’s 360-degree data center tour is just a quick publicity stunt aimed at reinforcing the company’s message around its cloud ambitions. Still, it’s also a nice opportunity to learn about the massive scale of Google’s data centers, the efforts it undertakes to make them more efficient and environmentally-friendly, and the careful attention it pays to privacy and security.

The tour takes place at one of Google’s facilities in Oregon, and can be viewed via a Web browser on desktop or mobile phones. For the most immersive experience however, Google recommends viewing the video with its Cardboard VR tool.
