Will adoption of OpenStack catch up to public cloud? | #OpenStack

The maturing of OpenStack is evident in the number of customers and the speed of adoption. However, the new versions of OpenStack are still adopted by users at a pace that lags behind adoption of other public and private cloud services. The reason, according to Brian Gracely (@bgracely), cohost of theCUBE, from the SiliconANGLE Media team, is the difference in learning curves for developers.

“Operations is the hardest part of doing this,” Gracely told cohosts Stu Miniman (@stu) and John Walls at today’s wrapup segment of the OpenStack Summit event being held in AuStin, TX. “You’re in essence asking every single customer, every single IT organization, to learn something different, to think about going fast,” he said. “I think that will always be behind public cloud,” he said of the adoption of new versions of OpenStack.

The challenges of mobile

The need to do things faster, instead of doing them reliably, is a major challenge to IT professionals today, said Gracely. However, it is crucial to meet the challenge, because, “Mobile is becoming the dominant computing platform,” he said.

Mobile users have come to expect a very rapid cycle of updates, and, “It would be very difficult to say, ‘Hey guys, we’re going to back this off and do it half as many times,” he added.

Back at the data center, it would be wiser to consider alternatives that can help a company move faster, rather than try to change users’ expectations, Gracely contended.
