HP ‘reinvents the Chromebook for the office’: Is the HP Chromebook 13 the best for work?
On Thursday, HP Inc. and Google jointly unveiled the HP Chromebook 13, an all-metal, 12.9 millimeters thin laptop running Google’s ChromeOS.
The HP Chromebook 13 is available is three configurations, all at different price points. For $499, you get a 1080p screen, a Skylake-based Pentium chip, and 4GB of RAM. For a $100 more, you get a 900MHz (2.2GHz Turbo) Core m3-6Y30 CPU with a 3200 x 1800 Quad HD display, but still only 4GB of RAM.
If you’re willing to spend more on a Chromebook, you can get the model with 16GB of RAM and the Core m7-6Y75 CPU for $1029, still cheaper than the top of the range Google Chromebook Pixel. All three models ship with 32GB of eMMC storage.
As Chromebooks go, the HP Chromebook 13 is probably the best looking device we’ve ever seen. The all-metal design is finished with a brushed metal look and it’s also one of the thinnest at just 12.9 mm — thinner than Apple’s new MacBook.
The HP Chromebook 13 (and most other laptops) also trumps the MacBook when it comes to ports with two USB Type-C ports for data transfer and charging, one USB Type-A port and a microSD slot. If that’s not enough, you can spend an extra $149 and get the option HP Elite USB-C docking station with ports for two Full HD displays and more USB-connected devices.
HP touts the HP Chromebook 13 as a work-ready device taking on the likes of the Dell Chromebook 13, the new Acer Chromebook 14 for Work, the slightly-dated Samsung Chromebook 2, and Google’s own Chromebook Pixel.
Note: On Thursday — coinciding with the joint release of the HP Chromebook 13 — Google discontinued sales of the $999, Core i5 version of the Google Chromebook Pixel. It continues to sell the $1299, Core i7 version detailed below.
Below we compare the technical specification of these work-ready Chromebooks followed by an HP Chromebook 13 gallery.
