EMC and Dell build two-headed tech industry giant | #emcworld

One of the biggest acquisitions in tech history is happening right now. Dell, one of the industry giants to stride across the tech world has found EMC, another giant in its own field, and the two are putting the last stitches in for a merger that will shape the future of technology.

To gain some insight on this historic combination of powers, John Furrier (@furrier) and Dave Vellante (@dvellante), cohosts of theCUBE, from the SiliconANGLE Media team, joined Howard Elias, president and COO of Global Enterprise Services at EMC and Dell-EMC Integration Leader, during the EMC World 2016 conference in Las Vegas.

The details of the deal

The discussion opened with a look at where the merger stands at the moment. Elias said that at the highest levels, things are on plan, on track and on the original timeline. Some local and international government approvals are still in motion, but most regulatory is was already complete.

Elias then explained how this deal is like and unlike others of its type. He said while it’s larger, that doesn’t mean it’s more complex. Their two portfolios are complementary with little overlap, and their cultures are similar. He pointed out that Dell and EMC had partnered for years in a venture worth billions before the merger.

IT management and guiding principles

Not all IT is equal, Elias said, it just depends on where the company is in its journey. However, he continued, just like the companies share a compatible portfolio, the same is true of their IT structure. “We’re going to preserve and protect the value each company has created,” he said.

As for the guiding principles at work in the merger, first, do no harm, Elias said. Then protect the value they both create. Make sure to deliver a phenomenal employee experience, and make them feel like they’re part of a new company.

For the customer, they get everything they get today, plus the power of the merger through new offerings and new capabilities. Show them the new customer experience it is capable of delivering.
