EMC prioritizes open-source integration | #emcworld

EMC was one of open source’s early adopters, bringing community-driven innovation to enterprise technology. It also knows its customers want value.

Josh Bernstein, EMC’s new VP of technical strategy, sat down with Stu Miniman (@stu) and Brian Gracely (@bgracely), cohosts of theCUBE, from the SiliconANGLE Media team, during EMC World to talk about the value open source brings to EMC.

“To me, it’s about integration,” Bernstein said. “Open source allows me to consume software in a way that makes it easier to integrate the rest of my environment. As we move towards cloud-native applications, and towards micro services, and start to adopt 12-factor applications, the ease of integration is what people care about in the end. Customers want a solution that has real value. They’re not necessarily concerned about the fastest or the largest; they want to see how it fits in their environment. The work that we do around EMC code really solves that last mile.”

Prioritizing container persistence

EMC also prioritizes container persistence. Bernstein also broke down container persistence for prospective customers that may not realize its importance.

“Containers are more lightweight, so you get more agility, and they are a lot simpler,” he said. “Unfortunately, the fact that they don’t persist makes migrating applications to containers relatively difficult. I felt that if we could solve that issue technically and operationally, we could really help customers move the ball forward into a third platform and into these container worlds.”
