Virtustream launches enterprise cloud storage platform | #emcworld

EMC Corp. subsidiary Virtustream yesterday launched its Storage Cloud platform at EMC World in Las Vegas. Available later this month, the Virtustream Cloud Platform is designed for large enterprises and the public sector, the announcement said.

The platform is able to handle web-scale object storage and also extends to on-premises EMC storage to the cloud. Virtustream added that the new solution is ideal for highly sensitive data management, and has already been tested extensively for latency and performance.

“Enterprises are generating exponentially-growing data and looking for cost-effective strategies for long-term backup retention and archival storage, in addition to seeking resilient, cost-effective and scalable platforms for cloud-native application data,” Rodney Rogers, CEO at Virtustream, said in a statement. “Virtustream Storage Cloud will provide a scalable, enterprise-class platform to meet our customers’ cloud storage needs for both second and third platform applications.”

Here are some of the main features, taken straight from the press release:

  • Engineered-in resiliency delivering up to 13 x 9s of data durability
  • Architected and optimized for performance, particularly for large object sizes
  • Available read-after-failure provides resiliency and data integrity even in case of single site failure
  • Seamless extensibility of on-premises primary storage and backup to the cloud

Virtustream said its Storage Cloud will go generally available on May 10, but in fact the platform has been in beta testing for several years, with a number of “large-scale” customers using it as their primary object storage platform for some time already.

In addition, EMC said the platform is compatible with many of its own products and solutions, including EMC Data Domain, Isilon, Data Protection Suite, and its VMAX, XtremIO and Unity systems. EMC is planning to add support for web-scale object storage for cloud-native apps in the near future too.

Syncplicity has already adopted Virtustream Storage Cloud as its primary customer storage platform, and is delighted with the results so far.

“The combination of Syncplicity’s industry-leading hybrid EFSS solution with Virtustream’s highly secure and scalable storage cloud delivers unrivalled mobile access user experience anytime, anywhere and on any device, with the security and data residency compliance demanded by enterprises, while at the same time enabling IT infrastructure digital transformation initiatives and significant cost take out,” said Jon Huberman, CEO at Syncplicity.
