Digital India influences IT at public companies | #infa16

Gassing up the car in India is a dramatically different than what many US citizens experience. For example, all pumps are manned, but more surprisingly, the oil company is owned largely by the government. Indian Oil Corp., Ltd. (IOC) is the largest oil refining enterprise in India.  The Indian government owns an 80 percent stake in the company. Currently, IOC is working on “green initiatives,” according to Abhishek Choudhary, manager of Information Systems at IOC.

Choudhary talked with John Furrier (@furrier) and Peter Burris (@plburris), cohosts of theCUBE, from the SiliconANGLE Media team, at Informatica World 2016 in San Francisco. IOC is a “net importer of oil.” The company converts crude oil into petrol and diesel. Then, IOC disturbs its products nationwide. In addition to these green initiatives, Choudhary made reference to the country’s campaign, Digital India.

Digital India at work

Digital India launched in July 2015. The campaign is still growing as it continues to influence IT at various public companies. The mission is to digitize the population in order to smooth over certain aspects of life in India. How IOC plays into that mission is utilizing the identification system to pay energy bills, as well as to initiate new services.

The hope is that soon a customer will be able to order a service completely online and then enjoy that service the next day.  The customers would be able to access all their services “under one umbrella.”
