HPE server business on an upswing in a down market | #HPEdiscover

Who says the server business is obsolete? Not Alain Andreoli, SVP and GM of the Global Servers Business Unit at Hewlett-Packard Enterprise Co., who can now boast 80 consecutive quarters of market share growth that has been quantified by research group IDC. The Global Servers Business Unit at HPE is winning market share from some big names.

Andreoli, a regular on theCUBE from the SiliconANGLE Media team, sat down with host Dave Vellante (@dvellante) at HPE Discover 2016 being held at Sands Expo and Convention Center in Las Vegas to talk about this growth and the future of the server business.

Maintaining the lead

While Andreoli is celebrating the good results, he said he remains a little paranoid because the future still has to be won. His business unit has seen almost double-digit growth in constant currency during the first half of the year. All of this growth is happening in a market that’s declining.

“Our customers have been great with us in continuing to trust us in a market that has changed profoundly versus what is was two years ago. So we have gone to new places and these new places are taking off,” Andreoli commented.

A strategy for growth

Andreoli knows he has to remain competitive and he feels that optimizing workloads is a relevant strategy.

“What we have done is completely mapped the market. We segmented the market in terms of workload and customer segment. We’ve used a modular approach … and specialize our offering to yield the best outcome for the typical workload that we are seeing people typically use,” he explained.

This methodology has delivered some worthy results, as Andreoli noted that IDC named them the world leader in total storage, and he claims that the company is the largest provider to the cloud.

Transforming the small enterprise

According to Andreoli, HPE has invented a new IT form factor for the branch or the small enterprise. HPE ProLiant Easy Connect delivers hybrid IT through subscription model to small and mid-sized businesses. The on-premise server as provides the benefits of the cloud and scales to the size of the business.

Andreoli and Vellante cover topics from IoT sensors to memory-centric computing. According to Andreoli, he likes to explore the innovation that will help him stay a market leader.
