Facing the music by capturing the data | #HPEdiscover

In the world of digital media, protecting the performance rights of millions of international music creators and publishers can break the data bank. So when SOCAN (the Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada), a not-for-profit organization that represents artists, needed more storage for the digital media they collect, they turned to HPE Storage for a solution

Neeraj Gokhale, VP of Global Marketing and Product Management, HP Storage, at Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co. (HPE), and Trevor Jackson, director of IT and Infrastructure at SOCAN (Society of Composers, Authors & Music Publishers of Canada), spoke to John Furrier (@furrier) and Dave Vellante (@dvellante), cohosts of theCUBE, from the SiliconANGLE Media team spoke, during HPE Discover 2016  at  in Las Vegas about how HPE is helping the nonprofits collect royalties through data storage.

Composable storage: The fruit on the tree

Furrier began the interview remarking about HPE Storage success. He asked Gokhale about the latest trend in composable storage and his vision of this trend.

“Composable vision is born out of what our customers really need. If you look at the storage industry revolution it really has gone … to how many you want to a new modern framework, which is what we like to simplify down to a service-level optimized system, defined models and perhaps a capacity or cost optimized end of the spectrum, which is how we think about our software defined spectrum,” explained Gokhale. “We kept on simplifying the portfolio for our customers and got it down to these two points.”

The challenge of capturing streaming content

Jackson described how the explosion of digital services he has seen over the past 10 to 15 years with services like Spotify and Netflix. “So one of the challenges we have is being able to aggregate all the data and information that we are receiving from the performances and ensuring that the creators of the music are properly compensated for their work,” said Jackson.

SOCAN is aware there is a Big Data problem, and it is tackling the issue using traditional systems while looking at other options, such as machine learning and block chain. He described it as a continual learning experience. The company is seeing a shift in what it calls “cord cutters” — these are the people who are not purchasing music or other programming, as well as people not owning the content but merely streaming it. Due to this, there is a huge increase in data to analyze.

In order to overcome the challenges SOCAN was facing, Jackson’s team adopted the HPE 3PAR StoreServ due to the unified OS and what he calls tons of headroom. And so far the results are good.

The application is evolution path for storage

Gokhale envisions an evolution path to further storage. However, today he feels that control should come from the application.

“So you think about storage optimization, you think about the protection aspects of it. Let the application drive the policies that you need to drive storage,” he said. “Instead of having a storage admin doing this separately, let the app admin do it so it is as easy as possible. That’s where today’s state of the art is.”
