It seems like everyone in the tech industry is jumping on the live video streaming bandwagon, which already includes major companies like Facebook, Twitter, Amazon, and Google. Now it looks like Yahoo, Inc. wants to be part of the cool crowd too, as its microblog platform Tumblr is set to launch its own live video feature this week.
So far Yahoo has released almost no information on the new video feature or what it means for Tumblr, and the company has said nothing about it aside from the fact that it will be launching Tumblr’s live video on Tuesday, June 21.
Introducing live video to Tumblr could be a smart move for Yahoo, which has been struggling to remain relevant in a world where it has been all but replaced by companies like Google and Facebook. Of course, the real difficulty lies in monetizing its services, and while Tumblr may be popular, it is not exactly making Yahoo much money. For example, in 2014, Tumblr failed to hit its lofty $100 million revenue goal, which was set by Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer.
It is unclear how much of a demand there is for a live video feature on Tumblr or how exactly it will work, but it seems most likely that the livestreaming will be more like Periscope or Facebook Live and less like YouTube Live or Twitch.
Tumblr currently has a very cryptic streaming schedule posted at livevideo.tumblr.com, which includes descriptions such as “You will learn the metaphysical truth about your Tumblr,” “We will make Things Organized Neatly organize things neatly,” and “We will inflate a very big thing in a very small room.”
There is even one broadcast on the schedule that claims it will show live video from Mars.
