Zokets exits stealth to simplify large-scale container clusters

The show floor at this week’s DockerCon in Seattle is teeming with vendors promising to ease the development and maintenance of containerized services. Among them is Zokets Inc., a new upstart that aims to automate not one but several of the most tedious tasks involved in the application delivery cycle. First on its checklist is the initial composition stage.

Zokets’ platform sports a graphical configuration interface that provides the ability to combine disparate containers into a functioning service using drag-and-drop commands. From there, the workload can be deployed on the customer’s infrastructure of choice via an equally streamlined “one-click” deployment option. It’s compatible with on-premise hardware, the outfit’s managed application hosting environment and several popular public clouds. The functionality has the potential to shave days or weeks off every Docker project in an organization, and that’s before taking the platform’s other automation features into account.

Zokets claims that its software enables operations professionals to centrally manage the storage and networking components of their container clusters, as well as tackle operational problems when they emerge. The platform is even able to take care of some problems on its own thanks to built-in automated recovery functionality. And to top it all off, the outfit also included access controls in the package to spare customers the hassle of using a third party tool.

An organization can utilize the feature to ensure that the various teams involved in a Docker project uphold compliance rules and don’t accidently compromise one another’s work. As a result, Zokets CEO A.J. Hunyady says that his firm’s platform is secure enough to run financial and e-commerce applications. But while the breadth of its capabilities is certainly appealing, the system can be expected to meet tough competition.

The container ecosystem has seen several other automation suites launch this year along with numerous point solutions that compete with Zokets in specific areas like security. Even Docker Inc. itself offers a number of tools designed to ease the development of containerized applications, which will no doubt take center stage at its conference this week.
