Providing a holistic hyper-converged experience | #NEXTConf

The goal of hyper-convergence is to make things simple. By bringing systems together under one digital roof, developers are freed to focus on better things than running infrastructure. However, it’s possible for a company to run into the problem where every Cloud has its own particular needs and every install its own unique demands.

Soon enough, that hyper-converged simplicity is lost to a new forest of things to manage. Business needs a holistic experience in their hyper-converged systems, and that’s only possible when working with a massive partner.

To gain some insight into what such a partner can provide, Dave Vellante (@dvellante) and Stu Miniman (@stu), cohosts of theCUBE, from the SiliconANGLE Media team, went to the Nutanix .NEXT Conference 2016 event in Las Vegas. There, they spoke to Tony Parkinson, VP of EMEA Enterprise Solutions at Dell, Inc.

Architectures across the world

“You have to go with what the customers are wanting,” Parkinson said. He explained how customers want a product that integrates with their existing architectures. To help serve that demand, Dell plans to use Nutanix as a hyper-converged platform combined with assets from EMC.

Parkinson stated that Dell was the first OEM platform partner because customers wanted a tier-one platform. He described how Dell’s size and experience allowed it to deploy the same platform in New York as anywhere else in the world. He called it a holistic experience that makes Dell different from other companies.

Innovation and adoption

The conversation shifted toward why customers move to hyper-convergence. Parkinson related that where converged platforms started to disrupt the usual silos, hyper-convergence was a serious disruption. The question Dell asked customers was, how much do they want to spend keeping the lights on, and how much on innovation? Companies want to accelerate their journey to the Cloud, and hyper-convergence gets them there.

The discussion also touched on the adoption of hyper-convergence across the world. Parkinson stated that Europe was first, centered in France. From there, it filtered out to the rest of Europe and the Middle East. In North America, large federal organizations, healthcare and manufacturing concerns were adopting the platform. He stated that no one wants to be first, but with so many examples, it was becoming ubiquitous.
