iOS 10 tips & tricks: How to set up your Bedtime Clock and get a good night’s sleep

Apple announced the new features of its latest operating system for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch earlier this month. In addition to new features for Messages, Photos, and Maps, there is also a range of ‘hidden’ features that are slowly being discovered as the developers spend more time exploring iOS 10.  

One new feature coming to iOS 10 is the new Bedtime Clock, which will hopefully ensure you get a good night’s sleep.

Note: iOS 10 is currently only available in beta 1 for developers. Even if you are not a developer, you can download the beta 1 or you can enroll for the public beta due out next month. The official release of iOS 10 will happen in September. Downloading beta versions come with its fair share of risk, so you should ensure you do not install it on your main device.

We look at how to use the new Bedtime Clock, including setting the Wake Alarm, adjusting it and disabling it.

Set up a new sleep schedule

Tap on the Clock app on your device > tap the Bedtime tab > Get started > scroll through until you find the specific time when you want to wake up > tap Next > select the days of the week that the alarm should go off > tap Next.

On the next screen, the app will request you to set the amount of hours of sleep that you want to get each night > tap Next.

The Wake Alarm not only wakes you in the morning, but will also remind you when it is time to go to sleep so that you get your selected hours of sleep each night. On the next screen, you will set how many minutes prior to your ‘bedtime’ you want to be notified to go to sleep. Options include At bedtime, 15, 30, 45, or 60 minutes prior to bedtime > select an option and tap Next.  

Note: When it is nearly time for bedtime, a silent notification will appear on your Lock screen. You can either confirm you are going to sleep or delay the reminder for a few minutes.

Select your alarm sound and tap Save.

Select a tune, song to wake up to and adjust the volume

The default alarm sound for the Wake Alarm is set to Radar. If you are not a fan of this tone, you can change it to one of the other stock ringtones, simply tap the arrow icon next to Radar and select a new tone from the list.

Tip: You can also select any custom tone that you have synced with your iPhone.

If none of the tones on the list excite you, there is also the option to buy ringtones from Apple, just tap the Buy More Tones option at the top of the screen.

You can also wake up to your favorite song, tap Pick a Song > select the song from your Music library.

Note: If you are an Apple Music subscriber you can also select a song from your library, but it will first download the song to your device to allow for offline listening.   

The volume of your Wake Alarm is independent of the volume levels of other systems. To adjust the alarm volume, go to the Bedtime tab > Options > adjust the volume using the slider at the bottom of the screen > tap Done.

Check out your Sleep History

When you go to the Bedtime tab, you will be able to see your Sleep History bars, which you should attempt to keep aligned. To see a detailed history, tap More History at the bottom of the screen to see a detailed overview of your Sleep Analysis data and history on the Health app.

Adjust your alarm

If you need to wake up or go to sleep earlier, adjusting the alarm is easy. Simply go to the Bedtime tab and either drag the bell icon around the circle to adjust your wake time or do the same with the moon icon to change what time you are reminded to go to sleep.

Tip: To keep the number of sleep hours consistent, you can drag any section of the semi-circle to adjust both times simultaneously.  

Disable your alarm

If you need to disable your alarm, simply go to the Bedtime tab and toggle the switch next to Wake Alarm to Off. This will disable your alarm, but will not delete your schedule.
