Twilio beats the street with solid Q2 earnings

Cloud communications provider Twilio Inc. posted its first earnings report since going public earlier this year, and the results were extremely positive with revenues rising by 70 percent and the number of active customers also increasing sharply.

Twilio sells software for applications that allows organizations to interact with customers via a range of media, including text, video and voice. It’s proving popular too, with the company saying it expects to achieve revenues of between $253 million and $257 million by the end of the year, beating Thomson Reuters’ earlier forecast of just $242 million.

The company isn’t profitable yet though – it said it expects to end the year with a loss of between $0.28 and $0.30 per share, but still, that’s significantly better than analysts’ previous forecast of a $0.36 loss per share.

In a conference call that included founder and Chief Executive Officer Jeff Lawson (pictured above), Twilio reported growth across all of its product lines, helped no doubt by the launch of its new Sync application programming interface (API). The company reported it now has 30,780 active customer accounts, compared to just 21,226 a year ago.

Twilio’s strong debut on the market has been hailed as a beacon of hope in what has been an especially slow year for tech IPOs. Its IPO was priced well above its expected range, yet that didn’t stop shares rising by a massive 92 percent to $28.79 on its first day of trading. At the time of writing, its stock price has soared to $43.00.

There’s still much work to be done however, as the company recorded a net loss of $11 million, or $0.45 cents per share, for the second quarter. That’s larger than its losses of $9.6 million one year ago.

For the next quarter, Twilio is forecasting revenues of $63 million to $65 million and losses of $0.09 to $0.10 per share, while analysts put it at $61 million in revenues and losses of $0.10 per share.
