Blurred lines: Nutanix details plans for PernixData cloud acquisition | #VMworld

Cloud use is sweeping the world with its practicality and ease of use, but companies all have one major question: public or private? Two companies have come together to help enterprises answer that question and many more as they navigate the growing number of datastreams.

Sunil Potti, chief product and development officer at Nutanix, Inc., and Poojan Kumar, cofounder and CEO of PernixData, Inc., talked with John Furrier (@furrier) and Stu Miniman (@stu), cohosts of theCUBE, from the SiliconANGLE Media team, during VMWorld about cloud management and the Nutanix/PernixData merger.

Making a choice

Now that Nutanix has acquired PernixData, the next goal is to help companies decide what cloud works best for them, said Potti. When choosing between public or private, it’s important to keep two things in mind, feasibility and migration speed, he stated.

It’s less about which platform is better and more about which best suits the enterprise. A company must “choose the right cloud and enable the seamless migration to that cloud,” said Potti. There are benefits to both platforms, but as time passes, Nutanix hopes to blur the lines between the public and private cloud structures.

What’s up next?

Even with so much movement happening in the company, Nutanix still promises to deliver a high-end product. As demand increases for a seamless and easy-to-use architecture, Nutanix works to “deliver capability on a multitude of platforms,” said Potti.

Nutanix hopes to not only increase value propositions for existing customers, but to add a greater value to new ones as well. PernixData joined with Nutanix to provide customers with a “one plus one equals three” mentality.

Focusing on re-platforming also means taking a look at the IT department as a whole. There has to be a restructuring of how programming and architecture implementation happens, said Potti.

Perfecting performance

PernixData brings a vast amount of storage data expertise to the table and plans on using that expertise to build on new capabilities for Nutanix, according to Kumar. The company’s priority is enabling workload agility from old to new systems. As more customers look to the future, Nutanix hopes to increase performance value from cloud use as data centers slowly age out.

With a focus on the cloud, however, comes a concern for security. An enterprise’s primary concern for their data is always security, but Potti said it’s only a “temporal matter.” What matters most is performance and fixing any workload issues that may arise during migration.

The merger of PernixData and Nutanix has many practical outcomes, but in the end it was “ambition and culture fit” that were the biggest reasons the two came together, said Kumar.
