HPE revamps Vertica & Haven OnDemand with advanced machine learning capabilities

Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co. (HPE) has updated its Vertica analytics suite while introducing new machine learning capabilities to Haven OnDemand.

Vertica is software that analyzes structured data, for example information that’s stored in rows and fields. But with the new update, Vertica 8, codenamed “Frontloader”, HPE has introduced a unified architecture as well as in-database analytics capabilities.

According to HPE, Vertica 8 has been designed to help customers extract intelligence from data that resides in multiple silos throughout the data center, be it on-premises, in private and public clouds, or in Hadoop data lakes.

Meanwhile, Vertica’s new in-database machine learning algorithms enable users to create and deploy R-based machine learning models directly inside the software. In addition, HPE said Vertica 8 has been optimized for deployment on both Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure, with additional support for accessing data stored in Amazon S3.

Vertica’s data movement and orchestration capabilities have also been enhanced, allowing users to load data across hundreds of thousands of columns, up to 700 percent faster than before, HPE said in a press release.

Vertica 8 was one of the topics up for discussion at the HPE Big Data Conference at the Westin Boston Waterfront in Boston, MA, yesterday, during a session on SiliconANGLE’s TV show theCUBE, hosted by Dave Vellante (@dvellante) and Paul Gillin (@pgillin). In the session, Gillin pointed out that while Vertica is a solid enough product with a good, loyal following, he “didn’t get a sense of anything break-out” with the new update.

“I almost wonder, if Vertica was owned by somebody else [other than HPE] whether they’d be doing more with it,” Gillin asked.

Despite his initial pessimism, Gillin did admit however that the future belongs to technologies like Vertica, which add substantial value to the overall Hadoop ecosystem.

“At least in the near-term, I think [the future] belongs more to companies and technologies like Vertica, which deliver clear value, have good, sustainable and loyal customer bases, which aren’t trying to break the mold,” Gillin said.

As well as updating Vertica, HPE also unveiled Haven OnDemand Combinations, a new component of its Haven OnDemand cloud platform that provides advanced machine learning APIs.

In a press release, HPE pitched OnDemand Combinations as the fastest way to add intelligence to apps, thanks to its pre-built catalog of cognitive services that combine with a new drag and drop interface. Using the platform, developers can link multiple machine learning APIs together and copy paste code directly into their development projects, HPE said.

“HPE Haven OnDemand Combinations enables developers to improve time to market and ROI for app development and IT modernization projects with rapid integration of cognitive services designed to accelerate development with fewer lines of code, reduced testing with reusable APIs, and improved app performance with fewer API calls and less latency,” HPE said in a blog post. “Combinations is the fastest possible way to add intelligence to apps and increase ROI for your business. It’s like plug-and-play machine learning for enterprise apps.”

HPE said that both Vertica 8 and Haven OnDemand Combinations will be made generally available in its fiscal Q4.
