VMware offloads vRealize Business Enterprise and IT Benchmarking business

VMware Inc. has said it’s dumping its vRealize Business Enterprise and IT Benchmarking software, which is the financial component of its vRealize management suite, just five years after it first acquired it.

Private investment firm Skyview Capital has acquired the business for an undisclosed sum.

VMware acquired the software when it bought out a little-known company called Digital Fuel for $85 million back in June 2011.

At the time, VMware was extremely bullish about what it was getting its hands on, with then Vice Executive President and General Manager Boaz Chalamish insisting that: “Digital Fuel will add a significant capability to our portfolio, broadening beyond operational management to include business-centric capabilities.”

According to Chalamish, the acquisition meant that VMware would be able to deliver “new levels of financial visibility and control in cloud environments”, giving customers a better idea of how their IT investments translate into business value.

Well, that was then and this is now. A lot has changed in the past four years, and VMware now seems to think it will get along just fine without it. For one thing, vRealize Business Enterprise and IT Benchmarking was a pretty minor part of the greater vRealize suite, and the company still has its vRealize Business for Cloud, which boasts capabilities including “costing, pricing, consumption analysis for both private and public clouds, private and public cloud cost comparisons and more” that are quite similar to what Digital Fuel offers. With VMware determined to go all-in on cloud management, Digital Fuel was therefore surplus to requirements.

Skyview Capital said it plans to revive the Digital Fuel brand name for the product, which it says “has emerged as an industry leader in the ITFM sector, selling to blue-chip enterprise customers across multiple end markets including Financial Services, Government, Education, and Healthcare.” VMware has promised to continue providing support during the transition period before the acquisition closes.
