Developer community site Stack Overflow has launched a new feature that it claims will overhaul the traditional resumé.
Called “Developer Story,” the new feature allows users to highlight the accomplishments most important to them, by letting them share what they’ve worked on by linking to actual features they’ve worked on, blog posts or public code. “Those things shouldn’t be described in the second clause of a tiny bullet, or relegated to the ‘Other interests’ section of a resumé, to sit unassumingly next to your second-place trophy in intramural tetherball,” Stack Overflow notes in an announcement post.
Developer Story is also said to make it easy to learn about news jobs that fit personal criteria given that instead of simply listing education, it includes actual development experience. “The same way Stack Overflow Q&A put the right answer right on top, when you fill out your profile, Stack Overflow Jobs shows you roles that match the technology or projects you want to work on,” the posted added.
According to TechCrunch, the new Developer Story offers two views including a traditional resumé view for employers and a more modern timeline view. The timeline view emphasizes achievements, while the traditional view puts its emphasis on which projects a developer has contributed to, which languages they’ve used and which questions they’ve answered on Stack Overflow.
The site argues that developers should be assessed on what they have built, not on what they’ve studied, particularly given that according to their developer survey, some 56 percent of respondents did not have a degree in computer science or a related field. More details of the new service, as well as how to set up a Developer Story, can be found here.
