Dell and EMC: Widening the lens, leveraging the commodity chain | #DellEMCWorld

The recent merger of Dell and EMC has raised many questions around how the companies will work together. One of the biggest asks is where the new company will place its emphasis; on Dell’s server business or on EMC’S cloud and big data assets.

David Goulden, president of the Infrastructure Solutions Group, Dell EMC, at Dell Technologies Inc., joined Stu Miniman (@stu) and Dave Vellante (@dvellante), cohosts of theCUBE, from the SiliconANGLE Media team, during Dell EMC World 2016, held in Austin, TX, to discuss how the new plans for Dell EMC will benefit its customers and drive additional business value for the newly merged company.

It’s like dating, then marrying and moving your families in together

While the merger itself may have surprised the technology field, Goulden stressed that EMC and Dell have been working closely together since 2000, and during that time, many close relationships formed and solidified between the companies.

Miniman proposed the analogy that it’s as if EMC and Dell had been “dating” for many years and then “got married.” Additionally, the new merger is also not only a marriage, but one where the families all move into the same house. Goulden agreed with this assessment, and said, “When you’re working together … your perspective is really from your own lens; when you’re one company, the lens gets wider. I think people are going to be blown away by our [upcoming] joint solutions and joint products.”

Value in integration

Vellante asked about where the company is going to place its emphasis in the future, given pressures such as tightening margins, cloud, and open source.

“I don’t think of it as a hardware business, but rather … [as] creating value through the systems; leverag[ing] the commodity chain. There’s value in integration, in software, in services, and in go-to-market and integration with our customers,” said Goulden.

He also spoke of a unified channel partner program that will be in place by fiscal year 2018 and how he will be giving further details of this program later in the week. “We’ll get our partners to a place where they can get to take advantage [of our blended offerings],” explained Goulden.
