VMware intros Kubernetes-as-a-Service on Photon Platform
VMware Inc. said at its Vmworld 2016 Europe event that the Kubernetes container management system is now supported on its Photon platform.
Kubernetes is an open-source project developed by Google that has become one of the most popular management tools for container technology. The project is backed by a diverse community which includes major Linux vendors like CoreOS Inc. and Red Hat Inc., and last year fell under the wing of the Linux Foundation’s Cloud Native Computing Foundation. The most recent release, Kubernetes 1.4, debuted on Sept. 26 with a range of new security enhancements.
VMware’s Photon Platform was introduced in August 2015. It’s a collection of technologies used to run containerized applications, primarily centered around the fundamentals of a cloud-native approach. VMware said in yesterday’s announcement that the ability to deploy Kubernetes as a service on Photon should advance that goal.
“VMware Photon Platform takes a major step forward by empowering IT teams to deliver, secure and operate the modern services that development teams require with the infrastructure automation demanded by today’s leading enterprise organizations,” Paul Fazzone, vice president and general manager of the Cloud-Native Applications Business Unit at VMware, said in a statement.
The main benefit for Photon Platform users will be increased scalability, as the node clusters Kubernetes works with can be provisioned and scaled extremely rapidly. In addition, operators will be able to deliver “Kubernetes as a Service to developers in a multi-tenant fashion for workload isolation and security,” the company said. This means developers will be able to rapidly provision clusters, containers and virtual machines from a catalog of machine sizes, container and operating system base images.
VMware also said it’s adding virtual network services to Photon Platform from its NSX solution. This will start with switching and routing services, before expanding to include more advanced networking services and tools.
Finally, Photon Platform will also gain access to block storage services via VMware Virtual SAN. This will enable access to “flexible, programmable and proven persistent storage for containerized and cloud-native applications,” the company said. In addition, elastic, scalable storage will also ensure faster application deployment.
VMware said pricing and licensing will be listed when the Kubernetes-as-a-Service becomes generally available in Q4 2016.
