QuickBooks Online drives developer outreach to fuel global growth

Intuit Inc., the financial services developer of QuickBooks and TurboTax, has put third-party developers at the center of its new global expansion of its QuickBooks Online platform with an announcement today.

Intuit cited a study of small businesses in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and Australia that shows a dramatic increase in cloud, app and mobile usage amid small businesses over the past few years. From the survey, 62 percent of small businesses operate in the cloud, up from 37 percent; some 68 percent use apps, up from 50 percent; and 63 percent run their business with a smartphone, up from 43 percent.

As a cloud-based platform, QuickBooks Online offers financial service tools to small businesses that provide easy migration to the cloud. The platform claims 1.5 million subscribers worldwide and provides more than 1,200 apps, of which 400 are available in the QuickBooks Apps Store.

“QuickBooks Online is the platform of choice because it is the best cloud accounting solution for small businesses, the biggest marketplace for developers, and the best collaboration tool for accountants,” said Vinay Pai, vice president and head of Intuit Developer Group. “Our developers and partners play a huge role in building this ecosystem–they help us create innovative and useful tools that help small businesses flourish.”

Intuit outreach to developers

Intuit’s strategy for expanding its global services is to focus on developer input in order to extend the variety of apps available to its subscribers. It claims it produces the only cloud accounting solution with a user interface that can enable seamless workflow integration into QuickBooks. The company expects that integration simplicity with TSheets and Bill.com that combine data and UI seamlessly will make it easy for developers to customer integrations for businesses to use payment tools and accounting tools in the cloud.

Intuit also has added Webhooks functionality into its software to help developers improve app user experience by saving time and money through push notifications. Third party developers Method:CRM and InvoiceSherpa have used this functionality already to up their game. Method has used Webhooks to synchronize business data with QuickBooks Online and InvoiceSherpa used it to reduce hosting costs by nearly 70 percent.
