Google launches digital whiteboard Jamboard, takes on Microsoft Surface Hub
Google Inc. is focusing on team collaboration in the enterprise with the launch of its latest hardware the Jamboard, a digital, cloud-collaboration whiteboard.
The 55-inch 4K display has a built-in camera, speakers and Wi-Fi allowing users to collaborate globally with Hangouts. Collaboration with team members across the world can take place on other Jamboards or they can use the companion smartphone or tablet app.
With the integration of G Suite and Google Search, work from Docs, Sheets and Slides, photos from Drive or images from the web can easily be incorporated into the team collaboration on Jamboard.
Google’s digital whiteboard also includes various productivity tools like sticky notes and stencils, along with handwriting and shape recognition. The Jamboard comes with two stylus pens and a digital eraser allowing users to write and erase content like they would on a classic whiteboard. It will also be able to sense if you are using your finger to erase content off the digital whiteboard.
Microsoft Corp. unveiled its Surface Hub last year, which finally went on sale in March. Despite the delay, the Surface Hub has proven popular with enterprise users with sales exceeding original expectations. The smaller 55-inch Surface Hub retails for $9,000, significantly more than Google’s reported price of under $6,000 for the Jamboard.
However, considering Microsoft originally said its Surface Hub would cost $2,000 less than the final retail price, we will have to see whether the Jamboard will retail for under $6,000 when it goes on sale in 2017.
Watch the video below to see how the Jamboard takes team collaboration to the next level.
According to Google, G Suite customers like Netflix Inc. and Spotify AB are already using the Jamboard.
