SwiftStack adds Cloud Sync to ease hybrid cloud adoption

Object storage platform provider SwiftStack Inc. is doing its bit to ease hybrid cloud adoption with a new capability called Cloud Sync that serves as onramp to the public cloud.

Hybrid cloud is rapidly emerging as the most sensible strategy for hundreds of enterprises that need to consider the benefits of the cloud in the context of their existing, on-premises information technology infrastructure. Companies have invested heavily in their own data centers over the years and they can’t afford to just throw that infrastructure away, while data governance considerations also mean there is much sensitive data that can’t be stored in the public cloud.

With that in mind, Cloud Sync is billed as a capability that helps organizations to save data in line with their utilization requirements, and policy and governance rules. The new capability allows storage of data on-premises or in the cloud to be defined by privately managed policies, so the data is automatically delivered to its predefined location.

SwiftStacks’ Cloud Sync also works to replicate native objects to a bucket in the public cloud, rather than storing them in a proprietary archive. What this means is that applications can access and use that data more easily. At the time of release, Cloud Sync supports both Amazon Web Services storage and Google Cloud Nearline Storage.

“Our customers use the Amazon S3 API to access SwiftStack storage on-premises, and feel their data center is comprised of storage that is both behind their firewall and in the public cloud,” said SwiftStack Chief Executive Don Jaworski. “Syncing to the cloud is an active solution, giving applications the freedom to take advantage of AWS S3 or Google Cloud Storage today while IT uses policies to centrally manage corporate data.”

The company said that it will expand Cloud Sync to support additional public cloud platforms next year and will also expand data management for hybrid cloud applications. It also says that additional automation and interactivity features between private and public clouds will be included in a forthcoming update.

SwiftStack will be demonstrating its new Cloud Sync feature at Amazon Web Services re:Invent conference on Nov. 28 to Dec. 2 in Las Vegas.
