EMERGING TECH

New laptops and all-in-one PCs at CES: Dell Canvas, HP Sprout Pro G2 and Chromebooks

The Consumer Electronics Show is in full swing in Las Vegas. Plenty of manufacturers have already announced new 2-in-1 laptops, smartphones and car technology.

Here’s a look at some of the laptops, all-in-one PC’s and monitors that have been announced at CES so far:

Dell Canvas

In October, Microsoft Corp. launched its Surface Studio, an all-in-one PC that could be placed vertically or at a 20-degree angle. Now Dell Technologies has followed suit with the launch of its 27-inch QHD monitor, not an all-in-one PC like the Surface Studio, but it can be used flat or at an angle and can be connected to any Windows 10 PC.

The touchscreen Dell Canvas (main image) is like a digital drafting table and can be used for sketching, animation, designing, etc.

The Surface Studio has the Surface Dial and the Canvas has the Totem, a puck-like controller that can be placed on the screen and gives users quick access to tools and shortcuts.

The 27-inch display has a resolution of 2,560 x 1,440, much lower than the Studio, which has a resolution of 4,500 x 3,000.

The Dell Canvas will start at $1,799 and will be available to order from Mar. 30 on the Dell site in the U.S. In comparison the Microsoft Surface Studio base model costs $2,999 while the top-of-the-range version will set you back $4,199.

Laptops and convertibles

Samsung Notebook Odyssey for gamers

CES has already seen the launch of a wide range of new laptops and monitors aimed at the gaming enthusiast. Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. has decided to get back into the gaming market with the launch of the Notebook Odyssey.

Samsung launched a 15.6-inch model, which will be available in February and a 17.3-inch model, with an unknown release date.

The 15.6-inch model comes with various ports, including a USB 3.0 connection, two USB 2.0 sockets, HDMI and an Ethernet jack. The Notebook Odyssey, which weighs in at 5.5 pounds, includes a seventh-generation Intel Core i7 processor, up to 32GB of RAM and multiple storage options. The device also includes Nvidia Corp.’s GTX 1050 GPU.

When the 17.3-inch model is available it will also include a multi-color backlit keyboard and will support up to 64GB of RAM and up to 512GB of solid-state storage.

The smaller Notebook Odyssey will retail for $1,199.

Refreshed LG Gram laptops

LG Electronics Inc. has unveiled its new Gram laptops at CES, with claims of being the world’s lightest and offering up to 24 hours of battery life.

If the battery life sounds too good to be true it probably is. Cnet reported that LG’s claims of a 24 hour battery life is based on a decade-old benchmark. LG has also provided figures based on a benchmark from 2014, which claims a battery life of 17 hours, which is still impressive but we will see how it performs in the real world.

The three Gram models, a 13, 14, and 15 inch, have 1,920 x 1,080-pixel resolution IPS touchscreen displays. They include the latest Intel Core i3, i5 and i7 processors, up to 16GB of RAM and up to 512GB of solid-state storage. All models include two USB 3.0 ports and a full-size HDMI video jack, a microSD card slot and USB-C port.

LG hasn’t confirmed yet if and when the LG Gram laptops will arrive in the U.S. and haven’t announced the cost.

Samsung has also unveiled two new Chromebooks at CES – the Chromebook Pro and Plus (pictured), which will run Android apps from the Play Store. The two devices are also the first Chromebooks to come with a stylus, which slides into the side of the laptop and offers support for on-screen inking.

Both Chromebooks have a 360-degree hinge allowing users to switch between laptop and tablet mode. The 12.3-inch Chromebooks have a 2,400 x 1,600 pixel LED display, 4GB of RAM and 32GB of storage, plus a microSD card slot. The all-metal chassis, with two USB Type-C ports, weighs under 2.5 pounds and has a claimed battery life of eight hours.

The only difference between the two models is that the Plus has an ARM-based chip while the Pro has an Intel Core M3 processor.

The Chromebook Plus will cost $449 and will be available in February. A release date and price for the Chromebook Pro has not been announced yet.

HP Inc. has unveiled the second-generation Sprout Pro G2, an all-in-one PC that incorporates a PC, projector, cameras, a Touch Mat and built-in 3D scanner into a single device.

HP unveiled the Sprout in 2014 and launched another version, the Sprout Pro, for the classroom last year.

The Sprout Pro G2 comes with a seventh-generation Intel Core i7 processor, 1TB of SSHD storage and 8GB of memory. It also includes Nvidia GTX 960M GPU and Microsoft Windows 10 Pro. The display has increased slightly to 23.8 inches.

Like previous models, the Pro G2 includes a touchscreen called a Touch Mat that supports 20 simultaneous touch points. 3D objects placed on or above the mat can be scanned while users can also scan a piece of A3 paper placed on the Touch Mat.

There is no word on a release date or pricing, but it will likely cost in the range of the previous model of $2,200.

Dell XPS 27

At CES, Dell unveiled the XPS 27, an all-in-one PC that includes 10 speakers. There are two models to choose from, both with 4K displays. The one offers a touchscreen and an articulating stand that allows the screen to lie nearly flat. The other is a non-touch version with no articulating stand, but it does have a higher brightness.
