Apple releases latest updates for iOS, macOS, tvOS and watchOS, includes bug and security fixes

Apple Inc. has released the latest operating systems for iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac, Apple TV and Apple Watch users.

The majority of the updates include various bug and security fixes, as well as a fix for the graphics chipset and battery life issue in the new MacBook Pro.

Here’s a look at the changes and how you can update your device with the latest software:

iPhone, iPad, iPod touch users

Apple has released iOS 10.2.1, which fixes 18 security flaws, the majority of them in WebKit. The update includes a bug fix that caused the Auto Unlock feature to unlock when the Apple Watch is off the user’s wrist. There is also a bug fix for malicious contact cards that terminate the Contacts app.  

To update to iOS 10.2.1: Tap Settings > General > Software Update > tap Download and Install. Tap “Install” to update now or select one of the other options, including “Later,” “Install Tonight” or “Remind Me Later.” Enter your passcode (if requested).

Mac users

MacOS Sierra has been updated to version 10.12.3 and includes 11 security fixes. The update also fixes the graphics chipset in the 15-inch MacBook Pro, which was released in October, as well as a fix for the Safari icon fetching bug that was having an effect on the MacBook Pro’s battery life.

To update to macOS 10.12.3: Click on the Apple menu > click the App Store > select “Updates” from the toolbar at the top of the window > click the “Update” button to download and install the relevant updates.  

Apple TV and Watch users

With tvOS 10.1.1, Apple TV receives general maintenance updates rather than any major updates.  

To update to tvOS 10.1.1: On a 4th-generation Apple TV go to Settings > System > Software Update > Update Software > download and install the update. On a 2nd or 3rd-generation Apple TV, go to Settings > General > Update Software > download and install the update.

Tip: You can turn on automatic downloads by going to Settings (4th-generation TV) > System > Software Updates > turn on Automatically Update. Alternatively, on a 2nd or 3rd-generation TV, go to Settings > General > Update Software > turn on Automatically Update.

WatchOS 3.1.3 is the first update for Apple Watch owners since Apple pulled software 3.1.1 on Dec. 13 due to it bricking some Watches. WatchOS 3.1.3 is likely to include updates to Messages, Maps and notifications expected in 3.1.1.

To update to watchOS 3.1.3: Open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone > tap the My Watch tab > General > Software Update.

Note: The Apple Watch must be plugged into the charger, have a 50 percent battery life and be within range of your iPhone (running iOS 10 or later).
