Government app builder CSDC lands $30M investment

BuildGroup Management LLC, a venture capital firm led by former Rackspace Inc. Chief Executive Lanham Napier (pictured), has invested $30 million in Toronto’s CSDC Systems Inc., a 27-year-old Mississauga, Ontario-based developer of applications for government.

The investment will fund customer growth, product expansion, support services and rapid technology deployment. CSDC has worked with more than 50 governments at the city, state and provincial level on applications that improve public access and streamline government processes.

Its flagship product is Amanda, a cloud-based case management and process automation systems for governments and regulatory agencies. It covers such functions as licensing, permits, Freedom of Information Act requests, court automation, grant management, property tax administration, asset management and education collaboration. CSDC also sells Grantium, a specialized grants management package that it acquired in 2010.

The company’s clients represent a wide variety of government functions and applications, ranging from mobile apps for licensing and inspections at the state of Ohio to software for managing the fire department in St. Paul, Minnesota.

BuildGroup will serve in a support capacity to the company with a specific focus on growth and long-term strategic direction. “We see a compelling opportunity to use modern cloud technology to radically change how governments are run, and believe that CSDC is in a position to lead this shift long term,” Napier said in a statement.
