Watch live: Stanford’s Women in Data Science conference on theCUBE | #WiDS2017

Within the widespread effort to bring more women into the field of tech is the very particular goal of connecting women with the world of data science. Kicking off today at Stanford University, the second annual Women in Data Science Conference is a one-day event that looks to educate all data scientists on the latest research, with a focus on supporting women in the field.

SiliconANGLE will be at this year’s WiDS Conference with exclusive interviews from our roving news desk, theCUBE.

Data science is a field predominantly dominated by men, but the education sector is taking an active role in turning the tide. Recently, Stanford University launched its “Women in Data Science” program to garner female interest in the fields of data science, engineering and computer science, as well as support women already working in these areas.

Harvey Mudd College is also having huge success when it comes to attracting women to the field of computer science. Despite women only making up 16 percent of undergraduate computer-science majors nationally in 2015, Harvey Mudd College’s number of females graduates in computer science was 55 percent. Maria Klawe, president of Harvey Mudd College and the first woman to hold the position, will present at this year’s WiDS Conference.

As more and more colleges focus on getting women into the field of data science, it’s not only students who are looking at data science and related fields. Women in established unrelated roles, like public relations, web design and marketing, are looking to pivot their careers toward data science.

In November, SAP SE launched its “Back-to-Work” initiative, which provides professional women with the opportunity to re-enter the workforce, following a career break. Sinead Kaiya, chief operating officer, products and innovation at SAP will also present at the WiDS Conference, while theCUBE will interview Tanja Rueckert, executive vice president, line of business digital assets and Internet of Things at SAP.

Other speakers, panelists and moderators at the WiDS Conference include Margot Gerritsen, director of the Institute for Computational and Mathematical Engineering and associate professor of energy resources engineering at Stanford University, and Diane Greene, senior vice president of Google Cloud and serves on Alphabet’s board of directors.

Presenters at the event also include Finale Doshi-Velez, assistant professor of computer science at Harvard University; Stephanie Gottlib-Zeh, president at Agyleo Sport; Susan Holmes, professor of statistics at Stanford University; and Claudia Perlich, chief scientist at Dstillery Inc.
