ZeroStack uses AI to create autonomous, ‘self-driving’ clouds

Cloud computing startup ZeroStack Inc. is hoping to make the process of managing and automating hybrid clouds easier with the addition of new artificial intelligence-powered “self-driving” capabilities to its information technology management software.

ZeroStack sells software that organizations can load onto their own servers, or third-party servers, thereby transforming them into what is essentially a private cloud. Its products include a self-service platform that helps customers make decisions about capacity planning and the optimal placement of applications, as well as an integrated app store that provides one-click installation of popular apps. In addition, its platform is integrated with public clouds like Amazon Web Services, thereby offering easy migration of workloads between on-premises and cloud-based infrastructure.

The company today announced a major update to its platform, introducing what it claims is the first artificial intelligence suite for “self-driving clouds.” The new platform, ZeroStack 2.0, comes with a suite of machine learning-based capabilities that are just one part of a three-pronged strategy aimed at disrupting the economics of cloud computing.

With today’s update, the company is offering new features that include three levels of what it calls “cognitive” capacity planning, a state machine to perform “hands-free” upgrades and “intelligent” optimization for managing virtual machine sizing. These capabilities allow users to get the maximum performance out of their existing infrastructure, the company said.

In coming weeks, ZeroStack will offer a new cloud optimization suite that will help users to work out the most suitable cloud for each workload they’re running in order to achieve the best cost/performance metrics. In addition, ZeroStack is also planning to introduce automated performance troubleshooting to its platform which will help users to identify the root cause of poor application performance.

“ZeroStack uses AI to deliver a self-driving, fully integrated private cloud platform that offers the agility and simplicity of public cloud at a fraction of the cost,” Ajay Gulati, cofounder and chief executive of ZeroStack, said in a blog post. “Your private cloud self manages through advances in AI and computer science, allowing you to focus on your core business rather than cloud operations.”

Essentially, what ZeroStack is doing is applying machine learning technologies to help customers better automate their data center operations for maximum efficiency while keeping costs to a minimum, analysts said.

“The future of the data center is AI because fewer and fewer companies want to manage any infrastructure,” said Jim Metzler, principal analyst at Ashton, Metzler & Associates. “As a result, the responsibility to manage increasing complexity is shifting from the customer to the vendor. By incorporating AI technology into their software, ZeroStack is at the forefront of these tidal changes in IT.”

“With ZeroStack’s vision for automated cloud, and this first release of real capabilities, I believe they are the only credible cloud vendor to employ artificial intelligence in the service of enterprise customers,” said Torsten Volk, senior analyst at Enterprise Management Associates. “Given the increasing complexity of IT operations, deploying AI is an optimal way of managing costs.”
