Veritas Technologies is getting serious about expanding into the converged infrastructure market, and there’s no more obvious sign than a key hire it made earlier this month.

The company announced it has hired away Scott Genereux, Oracle Corp.’s leader of cloud and converged infrastructure sales in North America, to be executive vice president of worldwide field operations. The hire is key for Veritas’ plans to help companies and their information technology organizations to manage data as they migrate from internal data centers to cloud and hybrid computing.

Over the past four years, Genereux was responsible for the rapid growth of Oracle Engineered Systems, including Exadata and Zero Data Loss Recovery Appliance, as well as the company’s Infrastructure as a Service offerings, such as Exadata Database Cloud and the Archive Storage Cloud Service, that compete with Amazon Web Services and others.

Genereux, who has appeared frequently on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media Inc.’s video studio, said he aims to leverage the cloud and converged infrastructure sales expertise he gained at Oracle to lead Veritas’ cloud push. Veritas has a unique value proposition, since at least 80 percent of large-scale enterprises rely on its data management software. Those companies are now looking to Veritas to help them leverage the economics and flexibility of the cloud.

On Wednesday, in fact, Veritas announced a technology alliance with AWS. Veritas said it plans to offer its 360 Data Management capabilities to enterprises using AWS to step up their migration to the cloud and aid in the management of applications and data across hybrid cloud setups.

Veritas has been submerged deep within Symantec for years but is now a standalone company thanks to a $7.4 billion spinout orchestrated by the Carlyle Group. Veritas is going up against some strong competition, such as CommVault and Veeam that are focused on small and midsized businesses, as well as enterprise players such as Dell Technologies, Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co. and, not least, Oracle, in what will likely be a Steel Cage Match-style war over the next few years.

Genereux also joined Limelight Networks Inc., a digital content delivery company, as a director on Feb. 9.
