Intel says it is now a ‘cloud and IoT company’

Just as companies like Google Inc. are now offering cloud services to win enterprise customers, hardware producer Intel in turn is optimizing products with cloud providers in mind.

“We completely restructured Intel to be a cloud and [Internet of Things] company,” said Raejeanne Skillern, vice president of the Data Center Group and general manager of the Cloud Service Provider Business at Intel Corp.

Skillern spoke to John Furrier (@furrier), host of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s mobile live streaming studio, at SiliconANGLE’s Palo Alto, California studio to discuss how cloud providers have had a growing influence on Intel’s designs, as well as news from this week’s Google Cloud Next event.

“These cloud service providers have actually in some cases pushed us off of our roadmap in terms of what we can provide in terms of performance,” she said.

Google and Intel for cloud and AI

Intel formalized one collaboration last November, forming a strategic alliance with Google. For more than a decade, Intel has worked with Google on computing and other forms of technology optimization, Skillern said.

“We’ve actually expanded that collaboration to cover hybrid cloud orchestration, security, IoT, edge-to-cloud and of course artificial intelligence, machine learning and deep learning,” she said.

To that end, Skillern said Intel wants to design its processors to accommodate and assist the coming wave of AI software, even reaching into vertical solutions for specific industries like healthcare.
