Watch live from the IBM Chief Data Officer Strategy Summit

Exploring the latest additions to the C-level suite, the IBM Chief Data Officer Strategy Summit kicks off today in San Francisco. IBM Corp. is hosting various data leaders, including chief data officers, chief analytics officers and chief data scientists over the two-day event.

SiliconANGLE will be at the IBM CDO Summit with exclusive interviews from our roving news desk, theCUBE.

“IBM has made a big bid, going after the CDOs to empower them. This summit is all about how organizations become more data-driven, the reporting structure of the CDO, and the tools and methodologies IBM can provide to the CDO to support that role,” said Dave Vellante, co-founder and chief research officer of the analyst group Wikibon, owned by the same parent company as SiliconANGLE.

One of the newest arrivals in the C-suite, CDOs are highly sought after in organizations, having grown in the Fortune 500 from a handful five years ago to more than 300 today.

Despite the fact that a CDO’s role remains uncertain, varying from one company to another and lacking clear standards, Gartner Inc. predicts that 90 percent of large companies will have a CDO by the end of 2019. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology is also betting that the role is here to stay, and it is now offering an academic track to become a CDO.

“The use cases for digital business are getting more complex. The deeper tech is integrated in the functions of a business that generate revenue, the more complex things get,” said Peter Burris, chief research officer and analyst at Wikibon.

Historically, vendors simplified the selling process by targeting IT technology administrators that could roll out tech and reduce complexities. Yet recent market trends have shifted vendors’ attention.

“As IT administrators lost budget, tech companies targeted the CIO, hoping the CIO would do the hard work of internal selling for them. The new kid on the technology block is the CDO, and they’re getting sales attention that far outweighs their actual influence, in most circumstances. It looks like once again tech vendors are trying to sell to a role to simplify marketing and sales channels,” Burris said.
