Amino raises $25M to make it easier to find the doctor you need

Companies such as IBM Corp. and Google Inc. have been working hard to bring the healthcare industry into the 21st century, but anyone who has struggled to find the right doctor or specialist knows that navigating healthcare databases can still feel like the Dark Ages.

Digital health startup Amino Inc. is trying to change that with its doctor-finding app, and today the company announced that it has closed an impressive $25 million Series C funding round to develop new products and expand its team. The funding round was led by Highland Capital Management and also included investments from Accel, Aspect Ventures, CRV, Northwestern Mutual Future Ventures, Pilot Wall Group and others.

Founded in 2015, Amino maintains a database of more than 951,000 doctors and facilities, with data on their quality provided by more than 220 million patients. Amino bills itself as “a new kind of healthcare transparency company,” and it offers users detailed information to help them choose the best doctor for their needs.

Amino co-founder and Chief Executive David Vivero wrote a blog post in 2015 that he created the company after having to deal with the process of finding a specialist.

“I entered the health care labyrinth many of us know all too well: finding a different plan and a different doctor — and making sure I could afford it,” Vivero said. “These decisions about my health care seemed huge, but I had no context or expertise to make them confidently. It was a shot in the dark.”

In a more recent post, Vivero said that Amino has been working on new healthcare tools to expand its services, including Amino Plus for Employers, which offers expanded features for business accounts, and Amino for Providers, which offers useful features for doctors such as the ability to book patients online.

Vivero also announced today that the company is launching the Amino Data Platform, an insurance claims database that offers more than 9 billion claims that can be accessed in real time on demand.

“Our vision is to build a reliable consumer marketplace that’s founded in transparency—one that offers the same delightful experience that you expect from everything else in your life,” Vivero said. “Healthcare is complicated, but I know we can get there.”
