Company X wants to move to cloud, so it moves its own hardware into someone else’s data center who then connects it to Amazon Web Services while Company X continues to manage it. The method to this madness results in data sovereignty standards compliance or perhaps better connected Internet of Things devices, said Eric Pan (pictured), senior director of global alliance and partner marketing at Equinix Inc.
Data center operator Equinix is an AWS Advanced Technology Partner allowing companies to Direct Connect to Amazon cloud and manage their own data privately, Pan explained. After moving their own equipment to one of Equinix’s data centers, customers can opt to manage it themselves or have a managed services provider do so. This may seem jumbled, but it is actually a handy solution to companies with tough regulations to adhere to.
“Direct Connect privately connects from the end user to AWS without zigzagging through the internet,” Pan told George Gilbert (@ggilbert41) and Lisa Martin (@Luccazara), co-hosts of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s mobile live streaming studio, during the AWS Summit this week in San Francisco, California. “You get predictability and performance, and what’s really the most important thing … great user experience.”
It also allows companies required by law to keep data local and private. These may include healthcare organizations or retail companies that must comply with Payment Card Industry rules. Equinix serves these and other industries with 150 data centers in 40 locations across the globe.
Parts make the whole in IoT
Aside from data regulations, there are other reasons companies might take a shine to Equinix, such as to organize IoT streams, cloud and edge compute platforms.
The combination of local natural ingestion points, a physical space for storing data and connection to cloud, make Equinix a good fit for awkward IoT operations, Pan concluded.
