Watch live: the impact of tech on media at NAB Show 2017

With the expansion of social video content and virtual and augmented reality, content creators, media brands and marketers have been forced to rethink production and distribution to keep up with the times.

The annual National Association of Broadcasters Show, currently underway in Las Vegas, will explore this topic and others, including the impact of live video VR, AR and ATSC 3.0 (a next-generation broadcast standard) during the six-day event. NAB 2017 is expected to attract more than 100,000 attendees and will showcase aspects of The M.E.T. (Media, Entertainment and Technology) Effect and its impact on the media and entertainment industries.

SiliconANGLE will bring you exclusive interviews from the NAB Show from its mobile news desk, theCUBE. (* Disclosure below.)

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration and Amazon Web Services will stream the first live 4K video from space at this year’s event. The live stream from the International Space Station 250 miles above earth will showcase how advanced imaging and cloud technologies are taking scientific research and film making to the next level.

Live video streaming

Responding to the demand for live video streaming, cloud video services company Brightcove Inc. recently launched its new API-driven live video platform, Brightcove Live. The platform augments scalable live-streaming with server-side ad insertion, cloud DVR, content encryption and spontaneous clipping. “With Brightcove Live, we’re directly addressing problems facing publishers and broadcasters today — how to deliver and monetize live events and linear channels using simple but flexible tools, without breaking the bank,” said Anil Jain, executive vice president and general manager of media at Brightcove.

Last week, newly launched Workplace by Facebook announced support to stream live directly into the enterprise collaboration service. As the Workplace Live API is based on the Facebook Live API, there are already various hardware and software encoders who are supported, including Teradek LLC, Haivision Systems Inc. and others.

Millennial-focused web publisher Mic Networks Inc. raised $21 million in Series C funding earlier this month, bringing its total funding to date to $52 million. Mic, which launched in 2011 and claims to already reach two-thirds of U.S. millennials each month, will use the latest funding to expand its premium video offerings for live and subscription video on demand distributors.

ATSC 3.0

ATSC 3.0, a major overhaul of the over-the-air broadcast standard, is on its way to change the home-viewing experience and is expected to feature heavily at NAB 2017. Guest speakers will discuss early testing and its potential, which could include Ultra HD 4K broadcasting and high dynamic range.

Various companies, including Dolby Laboratories Inc., DekTec Digital Video B.V. and Ericsson Inc., will showcase their offerings in the dedicated ATSC 3.0 areas, the ATSC 3.0 Pavilion and the Next Gen TV Hub.

Keynote presenters at the NAB Show 2017 include Chris Hardwick, founder and chief executive officer of Nerdist; Robert Greenblatt, chairman of NBC Entertainment at NBCUniversal Media LLC; James Brown, executive vice president of content distribution, talent and marketing at Revolt Media & TV LLC; and David Hartman, journalist and media host.

Other keynote presenters include Larry King, radio and TV host; Harvey Levin, executive producer of TMZ Productions Inc.; Tariq Shaukat, president of Google Cloud customers at Google Inc.; and recently appointed Ajit Pai, chairman of the Federal Communications Commission.
