Photo editing app Prisma is now offering its services to other companies

Russian startup Prisma Labs, Inc., which is best-known for its popular photo editing app, is now planning to sell to businesses with the launch of a new website, prismalabs.ai, offering various artificial intelligence-related services.

The Prisma app isn’t going anywhere, but the company’s focus now will be marketing its machine learning tools to other technology companies. Prisma’s transformative editing app, based on the style of well-known painters, became an almost overnight success when it was launched in 2016, and already has an estimated 5 million to 10 million monthly active users.

The company now hopes to put its face-mapping, object-detection, segmentation and scene-recognition capabilities in the hands of other developers. In an interview with The Verge, Prisma Chief Executive Officer and co-founder Alexey Moiseenkov said his company sees a lot of opportunity in deep learning and communication.

“We feel that a lot of companies need expertise in this area. Even Google is buying companies for computer vision,” he said. “We can help companies put machine vision in their app because we understand how to implement the technology.”

The Prisma app will continue as a showcase for new features. The company plans to offer a software development kit to developers to add effects to their own apps, and to later offer services to businesses.

Moiseenkov told TechCrunch, “We want to explore the CV [computer vision] area and help companies also produce a greater user experience with AI — helping people to communicate easier, to solve their tasks.” The CEO said it has been working with some “big companies,” but didn’t name names.
