Google LLC announced today that it’s launching a mobile payment platform called Google Pay, which will combine peer-to-peer payments from Google Wallet and mobile payments with Android Pay into one service.
According to Pali Bhat, Google’s vice president of product management for payments, the goal behind Google Pay — at least aside from annoying people who mistype Google Play — is to simplify the payment process for both users and businesses.
“With Google Pay, it’ll be easier for you to use the payment information saved to your Google Account, so you can speed through checkout with peace of mind,” Bhat said in a blog post. “Over the coming weeks, you’ll see Google Pay online, in store, and across Google products, as well as when you’re paying friends.”
Google Pay uses the same tap-to-pay NFC feature as Android Pay for retail stores, and it is supported by all of the same businesses. Meanwhile, users looking to make online or in-app payments can simply select Google Pay as their payment option when checking out on one of the sites that support it. Google said Google Pay is already available for several popular online services, including Airbnb, Dice, Fandango, HungryHouse and Instacart. Google Pay also available for the company’s own services, such as YouTube, Google Play and Google Music.
Bhat noted that businesses will find Google Pay easy to implement because it’s supported by popular payment processing services such as Stripe. Google also said on the product page for Google Pay that the service “takes only a few mins to set up with fewer than 10 lines of code.” Mark Young, senior vice president of global strategy and business development at online ticket seller Fandango, said in a statement that Google Pay is “a simple, intuitive option” for customers.
To promote its new payment service, Google has partnered with Fandango and others to offer limited-time discounts on certain purchases made with Google Pay. Other businesses offering discounts for Google Pay include video equipment seller B&H and grocery delivery service Instacart.
Bhat said Google Pay has more features coming in the future, and he added that the service will eventually be available for Tez, Google’s peer-to-peer payment app in India.
