Pat Gelsinger, President and Chief Operating Officer of EMC, dropped into theCube at EMC World 2012 to speak with John Furrier and Dave Vellante—he visits every year at EMC World and always brings a lot of interesting insights into the moving-and-shaking projects at EMC. This time he sat down with the intrepid pair to talk about the future of the market, flash storage, and even analytics.

Vellante mentioned that EMC’s portfolio has transformed across the board with acquisitions, Isilon, flash, and software.

“Clearly with the acquisition of XtremIO, as we understand the taxonomy of the industry today, we have all the pieces we need,” said Gelsinger. “But far be it for me to say that we’ve ended innovation in this space at that level. So, I’ll never say never: we haven’t cornered the market on new innovative ideas but at least we understand the taxonomy now. We got the pieces we need, period.”

He went on to explain how all the products that EMC has gathered tie together in a synergy that deliver not just fabric, connectivity, storage, and analytics, but also the availability to mean that all EMC products are extensions of each other. A customer can grab ahold of one product and then look around the portfolio and discover that if they want to upgrade sideways or expand their project, there it is already in EMC’s inventory and it fits right in for them.

Furrier asked Gelsinger to speak about “frictionless data movement” and what’s called data viscosity or otherwise and understanding of how much analysis and business methodology is tied up in not just access but being capable of making sure data is where it is when it’s needed. Gelsinger sees the metaphor as a “data pool” instead of a data island, how private silos are a thing of the past, and that what’s important is virtualizing the data.

Now people don’t just need to store that data, but they need to store it with context and they need to be able to protect it. All of these elements mean that the raw data is just as important as the metadata attached to it as well as the application path for moving it from place to place or accessing it for analysis. All of these elements come together with EMC products in not just providing storage for massive amounts of data but rapid, protected availability.

EMC as a disruptive player in the data center infrastructure market

“What is it? We view our vision as centering around three things: cloud, big data, on a foundation of trust…” says Gelsinger. “And we see those things becoming the foundations for data and IT of the future. It is being the most disruptive player for data center infrastructure writ large.”

He sees EMC as wanting to be the primary data center infrastructure provider for everyone from big to small, enterprise IT, and even on-the-ground solutions.

“We are a products and technology company, 17,000 engineers,” he continues, “and we’re going to keep growing our engineering capacity. We’re going to increase our percent R&D over time.”

EMC has been huge in acquisitions and successful choices over the past few years. We’ve seen them grow from a storage company into an all-in-one infrastructure company who don’t just provide solutions, but bring together other companies who offer hardware, software, communication, and products that organically blur together.

Impact on niche communities

Gelsinger says that through all the different markets he saw two that were very ad hoc and extremely unstructured: the university (academic) community and the startup community. So EMC took a hard look at those cultures and started up projects to align to them.

He says that they started platforms that would cater to their needs, workshops to explain how they could use data infrastructure products to aid their missions. While much of both of these cultures work from the basis of people and they also often produce a great deal of data—generally with very low budgets in the beginning looking at academic—meant that it was a good place for EMC to insert themselves into the smaller niche aspects of big data and storage.

Click here for a slideshow of images from the interview

EMC culture and Gelsinger on “being a cool global company”

“In successful companies cultures are never static, you have to keep moving them forward, changing them, evolving them,” says Gelsinger. “I think we really have evolved as a leader and a much cooler place to participate in. As a thought leader in the industry we’re on the leading edge of the cloud, we’re on the leading edge of big data.

“But the next layer of the transformation really about is about being a global company. With all the success we’ve had with expanding the company success globally, I have to be as cool in Beijing, Shanghai, Qingdao, Bangalore, São Paulo, etc. I have to be seen as a cool leader in all of those places as well.

“I think we’ve gone from East Coast to a broad data center play,” he continues, “and the next phase for us is to really be a cool global company.”

Kicking off was a discussion on customer perspective and how people want proof-points. Building infrastructure for the sake of infrastructure provides no value. EMC translates value as being around agility, speed, and time to market, marking a shift in how some internal customers think about things. They want services faster, not necessarily perfect but quicker so work can start together and get it right.

The business is working through layers on top of cloud, thus we are looking at services such as platform as a services, true Business Intelligence as a service. The environment is also seeing introduction of thousands of devices a month into network. So the customer is interested in layers and is evaluating how to bring true user experience and give our users productivity outside of email.

One of the visions is – BI as a service, being the first layer of value on cloud infrastructure. A significant area in shadow IT is business reporting. This is typically spawned because of the notions that IT can’t report fast enough, or report in the way we want, or as frequently and in the format they are looking for. This is usually focused around some kind of reporting system. EMC is addressing this by using a layered approach, that being the basic component of cloud infrastructure, Greenplum technologies, and delivering one version of the truth, taking away the noise of “where is the data”.

This approach helps customers build skills to the analytics they want and provides them with data science as a service. Clients are free to use SAS or Microsoft reporting tools at that point, or any tools they would like to integrate. In essence, with delivery of competency around the tools, data scientists are enabled with subject matter expertise around the data, freeing the customer to go off with that information in any way they want.

Sanjay discusses some of the work and thought that drives the current mission of his team. An inspired analysis takes place of where data resides and the response to that being an enablement of platform, delivering competency around the tools and really delivering value to the business. As far as credentials, the data tiers and best practices are applied to the access model throughout.

Wikibon’s recent IT transformation survey was discussed, and disclosed some interesting tidbits about shadow IT trends. In response, Sanjay shares that present day cloud computing out in the open and has come out of dark corners. So the challenge is to embrace it or get out fo the way. EMC’s product has to act as the brokers of value – not about authorship, or about where it was built or where it was written, but how soon can we add value to the business.

Transforming IT is about infrastructure, self-service, automation, cataloging into one presentable service. Sanjay’s goal is to break down the big box of IT into little black boxes, so customers can pick and choose what they want at price points and service level they want. All of this will be presented as much as an automated service catalog as possible. Getting there means there is a lot of transformation involved. Transforming IT was all about IT, and Sanjay uses an analogy of the components of a factory that is built. Transforming the business in that same analogy is building the widgets you want on that factory floor. Transforming you is the factor that Sanjay states is the most pivotal, but likely to receive the least attention. It is critical because it covers the bits of the end user and the knowledge of what people need to do with these efforts, then drive value from it. Transformation is occurring at all levels of business into new levels that go beyond normal business function and into new innovation. It is up to IT to adapt to that transformation.

EMC’s project Propel is discussed. A go-live date is on the horizon. The virtualized SAP implementation on vBlock allows EMC to ‘trim the fat’ and take their environment into the future. Core systems have been revamped from the app layer to every layer – a complete rebuild and new line of business solutions. Only data and database are coming over to the new system. All the other components are brand new. EMC is focused on not only transforming the business, but they are undergoing that transformation themselves, truly living the transformation as well as preaching it.

No “suits” at hBase

The goal of hBase Con2012 was to bring the community together while downplaying the “suit factor,” which is typically found at conferences with the aim of the conference being “by developers, for developers.” In an interview with John Furrier to discuss hBase in general as well as some of the highlights of the conference particularly focusing on many aspects of both hBase and Cloudera.

Zedlewski also pointed out that hBase is operating in a very real time mind-set. hBase offers a higher level of extraction on top of Hadoop and the next higher level of extraction on top of hBase will open it up to more applications with a focus on recommendations being popular. Zedlewski is basically saying, why not give a semi-built mechanism for recommendations in real time, instead of having to analyze the data and then go from there?edlewski, in speaking about Cloudera, said that he always believed that they are a platform company and one that should be open sourced and to remain that way because “it’s just smart business.” He pointed out that Dell recently announced that they’re going to be releasing a “developer-driven Linux” laptop which will be open sourced, allowing programmers the ability to do with it as they please. Cloudera, like other developers, has their own ideas on how to save on space, power and cooling and being able to collaborate with others to make such goals attainable.

Who uses hBase?

Speaking about the people involved in the development of such programming, Zedlewski said that there are three classes of people who get involved in such a program: people who were already a part of the Hadoop community; the people who have been toying around with SQL databases and utilize hBase because they believe it’s the best option available; and the guys like him [Zedlewski], looking at the future of data management and the enterprise. Yet, you need apps for that to be possible – hBase represents the platform that the most commercial apps will be produced on. He pointed out that more ISVs certify hBase, 40-50 compared to the six or so ISVs that certify against the map/reduce API.

Zedlewski also talked about their strategy of development – learning as they go in terms of data. He said, “the more management of data that you foist onto the application developer, the smarter your app developer has to be, the higher the bar is, the more brains that person has to have and the narrower range of applications that are feasibly easier to do.” There are only a handful of applications that a person can realistically overlay the needs of a file system, and a larger set that seems to work on hBase, but an even larger one, such as adding another layer over hBase would open it even bigger leaving the bar for skill lowered. This would open the door for more developers who are able to build more interesting and useful applications. By following the more “on the fly,” or “learning on the go,” means of educating and expanding Zedlewski is clearly thinking outside the box and inviting innovation into Cloudera.

But when things begin to become more clear, we need EMC to be positioned as a leader in big data.

“As you grow into a large company, you can get trapped into only selling what’s on the truck and positioning your company to sell what you have today,” he says. “To be a leader you have to see where the technology and markets are going and focus on where you will need to be to establish yourself as a leader.”

Part of that is messaging, but marketing without substance is hollow. “The Greenplum acquisition gave us that substance,” he says. And by allowing it to run as a separate operation, EMC avoids smothering it.

That strategy has paid dividends for EMC with a series of acquisitions including Data Domain and Isolon as well as Greenplum. “We tend to buy these smallish companies and use our cash to accelerate their growth while letting them run as separate units.”

The next big step for EMC in positioning itself as a big data leader, he said, is to establish clear business use cases for big data. “To b a leader you need to show those use cases and the technology and how to apply the technology to the use cases.”

Real time will be an important step for big data technology. It does little good if the personalized message to the customer arrives five minutes after that customer has left the store.

However, he said, “you always need friends. For instance Cisco is a friend, and VDI is the embodiment of that.” VDI also benefited from being a separate organization, he said. These ventures can be crushed in a large company as different groups step in and try to help. VDI struggled at the start, but now it has taken off and proven to be a stroke of genius, with a near-$1 billion run rate in the last 18 months.

As EMC moves into real-time big data, it can work with VMware, which has some nice technology such as Gemfire that can compliment Greenplum.

VCE also gives EMC an opportunity to open the door to making SAP another friend. “If we can go to SAP and say VCE will give them less complexity and lower total cost, that is a big deal, because that is what they struggle with,” he says.

And HANA and other SAP technology works well in the big data space, even through SAP itself does not yet seem aware of big data yet. In fact, SiliconAngle CEO and Cube Co-Host John Furrier said that when he asked SAP Co-CEO Jim Snabe about it, he said, “Big data is hype.”

Burton says that comes from the more conservative nature of SAP’s market. “SAP is very good at talking business value to business executives. While we are more of a scrappy technology company. Big data is a big technology concept, which is why I think we are there a little earlier.” But SAP will get there.

“We are very excited about where big data’s going, and converged infrastructure with Cisco and VMware will only get bigger and bigger,” he said. “And we’re not through with flash yet. But if you want to see what’s coming in the enterprise, look at what’s happening in consumer. Two-thirds of all objects in Amazon S3 come from Dropbox. That is what will drive us going forward.”

It’s the year 2012 and Mayan doomsday movies will abound—even though we unearthed another Mayan calendar that doesn’t end this year—for the Internet, we have a different blackout on the way and one that will affect more than 500,000 people. These people are infected with some pernicious malware called the DNSChanger Trojan used to hijack people’s DNS queries and send them to man-in-the-middle servers.

The actual thread of this Trojan has been mitigated because the FBI took down the network involved and seized the servers that ran it—however, infections still persist.

After seizing the IP addresses used by DNSChanger, the FBI has been running the servers as if nothing happened so that people infected could change their settings and move on. However, on July 9, 2012 the FBI will shut down these servers and everyone still infected with this Trojan will suddenly find themselves out in the cold and unable to access web pages—this includes Fortune 500 companies who might have infected systems.

The first date set for this shutdown, March 8, has already passed because the FBI filed for an extension on the shutdown with the expectation that doing so without finding a better solution could be catastrophic.

In fact, Paul Vixie, “Father of DNS,” came out recently to warn that simply shutting down the DNSChanger servers would cause outright blackouts. “Remediation, which has not worked, has taken many forms, which did not work,” Vixie drily noted as reported by The Register.

Solutions have been passed around suggesting that the FBI change the DNSChanger servers to redirect requests to pages that explain the person is infected and then link them to instructions on how to fix their computer. However, this probably wouldn’t have any effect on internal systems that nobody uses to surf the web—but that said, even out of the 500,000+ infections every single one will not be caught.

Google has decided to step up to the plate and offer a solution: the above, except that it will be through their search engine and would provide the message that they should get themselves fixed.

Krebs on Security reports the statement from Google and how the warning will appear to those infected:

The company said the warning (pictured above) will appear only when a user with an infected system visits a Google search results property (google.com, google.co.uk, etc.), and will include the message, “Your computer appears to be infected.” Google security engineer Damian Menscher said the company expects to notify approximately a half-million users in the first week of the notices.

“In general we want to notify users [of malware infections] anytime we are capable of doing so, but the fact that we don’t do this more often is really just because it’s hard to come across cases where we can do it this accurately,” Menscher said. “In many cases we only have maybe a 90 percent confidence that someone is infected, and the false positive rate of 10 percent is simply too high to be feasible. But in this case we can be essentially certain that someone is infected.”

Google is throwing a lot of resources at this, including translators to localize the message across the globe.

“We think part of it is that all of the public press on this so far has been in English or a handful of other languages,” Menscher said. “It turns out that only half of these infected users speak English as their primary language.”

Time is running out on people and corporations infected with DNSChanger. Individuals may simply just not know and if they’re lucky enough to use Google they’ll find out shortly—corporations, on the other hand, will have to look to their IT Departments to make sure they’re not burned come July 9.

No Mayans involved.

Communication and personality. These are two of the skill sets you’ll need to develop if you’re thinking about becoming a data scientist, according to two industry veterans from Greenplum. Wikibon analyst Jeff Kelly sat down with Derek Lin and Noelle Sio, two data scientists currently working on big data solutions with EMC subsidiary Greenplum. During their interview at theCube at EMC World’s Data Science Summit mini event, Kelly took the opportunity to delve into an important area of the big data buzzword–how it actually translates to a career path to fill the growing gaps around emerging big data technology.

The role of the data scientist is something we’ve been exploring for a while, and its definition is as elusive as the term “big data” itself. The result is a pretty broad gray area where data scientists are carving out their own niches across a wide range of industries, the common denominator being their ability to break down company problems down to the data and build up a solution for business implementation. That requires keen communication skills, as you have to work with the business leaders, and also understand the math behind the data.

“Sometimes [businesses] think they think they know what solution they want, but for us, we have to uncover their pain points to see how those problems manifest themselves, so we can bring it to the path part to understand it on our terms,” Sio explains.

It’s very much about balancing the left and right sides of the brain, which is a departure from the traditional career paths we’ve previously seen for mathematicians, statisticians and even engineers. And that requires certain personality traits that are willing to think outside the box.

“[Data scientists] are very curious, persistent and tend to be very creative too,” says Lin. “The problems we’re working on are new problems.”

New problems for new careers. As a self-proclaimed problem junkie, Sio thrives on the excitement of new challenges as a data scientist. “If you give me something, the gauntlet is thrown,” she smiles. “If I know how to solve it immediately, it wouldn’t be fun. These are things that haven’t been solved before. It bothers you and nags you to get to that next step. It’s so interesting and the payoff is great.

“It takes a special personality type that craves difficult, challenging things, and wants to learn something every time.”

Lin and Sio certainly make data science seem like an exciting trip, and that enthusiasm has led them each down a winding path traversing fraud detection in the finance industry and quality assurance in the broadcast media space. Indeed, data scientists are finding that their varied skill sets make them adaptable in an era where big data has big demands.

Which begs the questions, how does one become a data scientist and is my current job at risk? Sio would say not to worry. “You can’t start planning for what will happen until you know what’s happened. Find what about [data science] is interesting to you…start thinking about expanding your skills in math if you’re interested in mathematics. Choose something adjacent to your skill sets.”

Education will also play an important role in supporting the growing demand for data scientists, as Lin points out. He’d love to see more programs at the university level as well, encouraging a stronger push in engineering, science and math.

Worth $17.5 billion as of March 2012, Mark Zuckerberg, founder and CEO of Facebook, is the 35th richest men on Forbes’ list. He was also named Person of the Year in 2010 by Time magazine.

Many experts say Zuckerberg deserves the position because he planned it, dreamed it and worked it out. He focused on his mission on making Facebook the number one social network in the world.

Facebook became a public company on May 18, 2012, and the first American company to debut in NASDAQ with a valuation above $100 billion. It was another big success for Zuckerberg’s influence on the social network that has changed the way people relate to one another.

During the early days of Facebook inception he said,

“When you give everyone a voice and give people power, the system usually ends up in a really good place. So, what we view our role as, is giving people that power. By giving people the power to share, we’re making the world more transparent.”

Surprising Zuckerberg facts

Mark Zuckerberg started “Thefacebook” because he wanted one online directory where all students could be listed at Harvard University.

Zuckerberg didn’t like the concept of putting banner ads on the site. He rented a house near Stanford after he dropped out from the university and to cover the cost of staff and running the site, he started looking into other advertising systems.

“We hate banner ads…lately we’ve been putting thought into other advertising systems that would be less offensive. Right now we put up what we need…it’s not that cheap — we have to make $40,000 a month or something, but it works,” he said.

In 2011, Mark Zuckerberg tops the ranking of the 100 most powerful media person published by the Guardian newspaper, ahead of Rupert Murdoch, Larry Page and Steve Jobs.

Zuckerberg now owns roughly 28 percent of Facebook. By Facebook’s current valuation, he’s richer by another $24 billion.

With the current asset valuation of Facebook, the entire GDP of Afghanistan ($17.9 billion), Nepal ($18.3 billion) and Jamaica ($14.7 billion) is lower than Zuckerberg’s company market value. In addition, the entire earnings of the porn industry of the US (at $10 billion) is also lower than Mark Zuckerberg’s current value.

Moreover, the combined salaries of all NBA ($2.09 billion), MLB ($2.9 billion) and NFL ($3 billion) players is smaller than Mark Zuckerberg’s worth. And U.S. video game sales for 2011 were estimated at about $17 billion, still smaller than the assets under Zuckerberg. Comparatively, at 28 Bill Gates had earned just $100 million, about $23 billion less than Zuckerberg’s worth at the same age.

Indeed, at 28 Zuckerberg is exactly half the age of the average S&P 500 CEO, but the IPO offering makes his company worth more than iconic companies such as Disney, Ford and Kraft Foods.

On a personal front, Zuckerberg doesn’t own a T.V. and he doesn’t like public gatherings, especially if he has to make a speech.

His friends on Facebook have access to his e-mail address and his cell-phone number. Zuckerberg has granted them access to browse his photograph albums, including the one titled “The Great Goat Roast of 2009.”

He’s like an addict when it comes to programming, and works like robot. More often than not he would stay awake, coding for days when he started the social network.

“I keep programmer time sometimes…programmers tend to stay up really late and work when everyone else is asleep. So it’s not really uncommon for me to stay up until 6 or 8 in the morning,” said Zuckerberg. “But the business world does not operate between 5 pm and 8 am, so that requires some waking up for.”

The lighter side of Mark

On the eve of Facebook’s IPO, Mark Zuckerberg published an unusual witty letter to potential investors.

“For years, you’ve wasted your time on Facebook. Now here’s your chance to waste your money on it, too,” Zuckerberg said. “Facebook is the most successful social network in the world, enabling millions to share information of no interest with people they barely know.”

He continued, “Every time someone clicks on a Facebook ad, Facebook makes money. And while no one has ever done this on purpose, millions have done it by mistake while drunk. We totally stole this idea from iTunes.”

“Finally, if you invest in Facebook, you’ll be far from alone. As a result of using Facebook for the past few years, over 900 million people in the world have suffered mild to moderate brain damage, impairing their ability to make reasoned judgments. These will be your fellow Facebook investors.”

And some most interesting things about Zuckerberg have appeared on various social media sites with the full intend of headlining Zuckerberg’s life. On the day of IPO, CDZA music wrote a musical that’s all about Mark Zuckerberg (see below).

Mark Zuckerberg and Sean Parker made this music video about the history and future of Facebook just before the IPO.

And here are some more funny videos, including Facebook in Real Life, and The Social Network Parody Movie.

Whether the topic is big data, clouds, analytics or the virtualized enterprise, Klayko stakes the importance of the movement of data and the structure of networking in those movements. Mentioning the bifurcation of two interests in the service provider marketplace, one being the focus on bit pipes or how to get the most bits down the pipe as rapidly as possible. The other is value added services, in other words implementing such concepts that face the modern enterprise and technology initiatives, such as seamless movement between touchpoints within the private cloud and from private to public cloud environments. The takeaway is that those technologies are just around the corner and customers now believe that they can get there. Brocade’s technology is one component in that strategy to achieve that.

Watch the video here:

Brocade itself has gone through an internal transformation to the point at which as of today 80% of its corporate applications are virtualized and 45% of those are in the cloud. A fascinating statistic for an organization of its size, but Klayko rightly adds that none of that is anything that should be of concern to the end user – it should be transparent in those terms. The role of networking fabric in the evolution of the data center holds vital roles in any number of situations such as hybrid, private or the growing variety that are emerging. The idealized fabric architecture is the foundation of any cloud – and has infinite elasticity. To boot, Klayko states that we will see 80-90% of the traffic in a data center showing east-to-west traffic patterns, in other words server to server, in the next few years. To support that you have to have the right fabric in place, Brocade is primed and focused on this need and features many customer success stories. It is reported that with some 550 Brocade clients that implement Ethernet fabrics, and another 50,000 with EMC that utilize storage area networking, brocade is starting to see doubling in that rate every quarter. The first application is typically virtualization and companies need that large spear of mobility.

The company’s relations with EMC and their alignment with the recent VSPEX announcement was discussed. Klayko noted that putting together a best of breed approach is always best for the customer. On EMC’s part they bring their featured variety of products especially storage to the table. Brocade’s specialty in world class, robust Ethernet fabric technology is critical in delivering this solution, in addition to the technological advantages in the Intel server space. Brocade is transforming their Ethernet business on to the next generation and is now the second largest 100Gb producer in the world. The market has been described as having infinite demand, as any organization tied in to the cloud or implementing cloud architecture will be engaged with Ethernet technology.

Flattening of the network is a driving force in Brocade’s evolving offerings. As Klayko notes, a server rack that has twenty systems in place does not mean that twenty instances exist in that rack anymore. It could easily be four hundred or more. And customers have that need to fulfill where seamless transition of data between systems is required, including hundreds of thousands of virtual machines. A large flat network is the best approach to solving this as going across networks presents more challenges.

Brocade’s vision is an interconnect, a combination of Ethernet and Fiber Channel that supports the most modern and future data center needs. Moving storage behind means servers and storage must stay in sync, from within the data center itself and beyond the perimeter as well. The demands of keeping such elements such as MCIP and MPLS in sync are indicative of such challenges. Advanced high-performance network is critical and where Brocade is positioned to deliver. Brocade is positioned on the standard of Ethernet vs. InfiniBand as the position and price points are known, and as mentioned in the video, they are in position to “ride the curve”.

One of the accepted meanings of acceleration in the enterprise focuses on shortening the “go-to-market” of application environment development. Brocade’s technologies support this mission by means of creating a robust and forward-looking API. Allowing redirect frames to the API supports examples of the features that are enabled or allow for future creation of features such as deduplication, security, encryption, and more that have not been invented yet. This is a core feature of the product design and prevents the foreclosure of future benefits often seen when entering in with one vendor or product type over another. Brocade also is aware of the increased demands of the datacenter and variety of products. The continual gap between demand and skilled labor is an element in their development. The way Klayko puts it, the answer is to either train a lot of people, or simplify the product. Brocade is dedicated to making it simple to use the technology.

Around the convention, the talk with customers revolves around cloud plans, virtualization, analytics, and what is planned for the future. Needless to say, Brocade is heavily involved in delivering solutions for all. Klayko adds that they are engaged in prefab solutions, where solutions are blueprinted, tested, and packaged for cleanliness, all to the customer’s benefit. In discussing going beyond the SAN it is discussed that Brocade’s 70% of SAN market share guides them to look for unique requirements and differentiation. This means looking at certain segments, at the edge of the network, and looking at fields such as content distribution – all which exhibit signs of high growth. Educational and government fields are two such channels that have a variety of needs where Brocade is delivering specialized products and solutions.

Wrapping things up, the discussion leads to Brocade’s vision and brand. Klayko states that Brocade is a pure networking company and they are really good at what they do. Data that needs to move from point A to point B at 100% guaranteed quality, Brocade delivers this and is committed to helping companies grow.

In what seems to be the most recent attention-grabbing stunt by the hactivist collective Anonymous is the announcement of the leak of 1.7 GB of data from a U.S. government entity whose job it is to inform the public of crime statistics. The United States Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) is a lesser-known department of the Department of Justice and it’s their job to collect, collate, and publish information on crime statistics gathered from agencies within the U.S. justice system.

Almost ironically, one of the statistics that the USBJS tracks and publishes information about is cybersecurity and hacking.

According to rumors about the leak, it includes not just data internal to the department but potentially also e-mails, memos, and other communication. The file has been uploaded to The Pirate Bay and is available for download, however few people have received it so far in order to sift through its contents and verify what it contains.

Alongside the leak, Anonymous released one of their commonly stunning—and often surreal—videos to commemorate the event.

Here’s a transcript of the English-portion of the video:

Greetings world,

We are Anonymous.

Today we are releasing 1.7GB of data that used to belong to the United States Bureau of Justice, until now.

Within the booty you may find lots of shiny things such as internal emails, and the entire database dump.

We Lulzed as they took the website down after being owned, clearly showing they were scared of what inevitably happened.

We do not stand for any government or parties; we stand for freedom of people, freedom of speech and freedom of information.

We are releasing data to spread information, to allow the people to be heard and to know the corruption in their government. We are releasing it to end the corruption that exists, and truly make those who are being oppressed free.

The price we pay very often is our own freedom. The price governments pay is the exposure of their corruption and the truth being revealed, for the truth will set us free in the end.

So once more we call on you. Hackers, activists, and freedom fighters; join us in our struggle against these corporate.

Dispatches from Anonymous collective sources also claim that the USBJS shut down their public website in order to stop the attack but there’s no evidence that this happened.

In a statement released yesterday, the USBJS responded to ZDnet with the following statement:

“The department is looking into the unauthorized access of a website server operated by the Bureau of Justice Statistics that contained data from their public website. The Bureau of Justice Statistics website has remained operational throughout this time. The department’s main website, justice.gov, was not affected.”

Day 1 was all about the cloud and getting to the real cloud solution. EMC is doing its very best to drive home the idea that there needs to be a shift from infrastructure to the cloud as well as more attention paid to data protection, as evidenced by the keynote by Jeremy Burton, EMC’s CMO who offered the prediction that one day every organization will have their own private cloud.

Burton continued by saying that it would be a pointless debate to discuss whether clouds would be predominately public or private, and that the cloud will likely be dominated by hybrid environments which, “we think will end up being the most pervasive model for computing, you will see application workloads [operating in] private clouds one day, public the next… and then move back.”

What about data protection in the cloud?

Yet, before the cloud can be seamlessly integrated into the business model, data protection must be addressed. Data protection is an area that is going to explode and is a fundamental area of interest with a high demand of backup into the cloud while also keeping it protected once it gets there. While initially data protection was a defensive move now it is more about growth and as reported on theCUBE, one of the fastest growing areas of the business with the goal of offering flexibility and choice for its customers.

EMC also addressed big data and from a new perspective. Joe Tucci, Chairman, President & CEO of EMC Corporation in speaking with reporters at EMC World has stressed the need to pay better attention to data sciences as the means of looking towards the future. Instead of focusing on the development side of the concept, instead EMC has turned big data into a business discussion and investing in the marketing and message of the service. Right now EMC is not going after the developers, instead focusing upon the business developers to educate less about speed and more about data science.

SiliconAngle founding editor John Furrier said that EMC is not “there with real messaging and real deliverables to attract hardcore developers in hard data,” and while they are not a leader in big data development, EMC is focusing intently on the business side. Furrier continues to say that he believes it is merely a timing issue, but from a developer perspective it’s really not just there yet.

EMC acquires Syncplicity

It was also announced during Day 1 of EMC World 2012 that the company had acquired Syncplicity earlier in the day, a file management system for the cloud that allows users to sync and share automatically, very similar to how Apple’s iCloud works. This acquisition places EMC into a better position to offer its customers a security compliance product which should help it reach out to Fortune 500 companies looking to both use the cloud, and use it safely and securely. Along with the news of this acquisition, there were other product updates that were unveiled by EMC. (For more information on Syncplicity, follow this link.)

EMC made a series of five announcements yesterday, making a small dent towards the 42 it plans to release over the four day conference, leading with Symmetric VMAX and the launch of three new VMAX storage arrays. The largest of the arrays, VMAX 40K has a scalability of 4 petabytes and “is designed for hyper-consolidated environments seen in enterprise data centers and cloud environments,” lending its support on the focus of the cloud.

Also announced is an entry-level mid-range VNX which offers file and block-level storage. EMC Data Domain and Avamar updates were announced for the deduplication, backup and recovery appliances. Sticking with the cloud theme, EMC Atmos is going to be upgraded, with the cloud platform which was first introduced in 2008 along with the Sumatra release. Sumatra will increase the speed in which a large file reads and writes, as well as work with the Google Chrome browser which will give the company the ability to restrict who can, and cannot, upload and download objects. Lastly, EMC announced EMC DataBridge which will make it easier for in-house developers to work together, create and publish IT operations reporting.
