In response to a question from Williams, Sheehan said that he believes Node.js is technically mature, but that the ecosystem still has some ripening ahead of it. O’Grady agreed, and added that a growing amount of adoption from enterprises (he pointed at Microsoft as a specific example, which was one of the sponsors of the Node Summit even) is driving Node.js closer towards hitting mainstream status. He expanded on this point by noting that the young ecosystem is growing at a remarkably fast pace compared with other technologies – and this time it was Sheehan’s turn to agree.

Sheehan referred to the lanaguge as the “current hotness,” and based it on his own firm’s experience with its developer community. He told Alex that Twilo has been seeing more support requests for Node, as well as an increase in the amount of apps written in it and more growth happening around it overall.

The second half of the interview focused more on Node.js’s unique values that managed to carry it to its current position. According to O’Grady the valuein Node expresses itself in a number of ways, first and foremost that the language was developed specifically with large-scale, data driven workloads in mind. It may not excel in handling other types of processes but, considering all the greatly justified fuss around big data and analytics, that’s not a shortcoming that is likely to hinder Node’s pace.

Seehan added that there’s a different approach involved as well, which also counts as a big plus. Developers can develop run both backend and frontend with Node, unlike with other languages.

Gelsinger and the EMC team thumped on Fusion-io today, casting it as a one-off, to gain attention for VFCache which it launched today with a big event in San Francisco.

During his press and analyst announcement, Gelsinger said EMC sold 24 petabytes of Flash last year. Fusion-io CEO David Flynn said to me in an interview today that his company sold 50 petabytes of flash last year. He said Fusion-io sold much of that Flash to the enterprise market, EMC’s customer base and scale out Web companies and cloud services.

That’s gamesmanship, which we love, of course. EMC is going to push aggressively on Fusion-io to gain acceptance for VFCache in the PCIe flash card market. And you can bet that Fusion-io will be coming right back with its own retorts.

“EMC Project Lightning is the smarter terminal play, trying to distribute somewhat into the storage,” Flynn said. “Project Thunder is the mini-computer play. We’ve seen both of these plays before.”

That about says it. Fusion-io sees itself as the up and coming innovative pure Flash storage provider. Its bread and butter is replacing Storage Array Networks (SAN) with Flash. EMC is doing what we see a lot from established vendors. The company is augmenting its existing technology by adding VFCache and Project Thunder, its next generation flash caching service that will allow VFCache to be clustered in an appliance and distributed across a server network. This kind of challenge happens to ever successful company at some point. This just happens to exemplify EMC’s situation in its battle with Fusion-io.

On a much higher level, Fusion-io comes from an application standpoint. It admits the actual amount of I/Os it can pass is irrelevant to customers. It’s more about latency. That’s where customers suffer. The latency gap puts a big draw on applications. For EMC it’s about storage. That’s at the heart of the difference between the companies.

“We see a wholesale adoption of the distributed scale out model as we have seen with Web and cloud,” Flynn said.”The key thing is here whether it’s an open architecture or a closed architecture.”

The EMC architecture is not ready for the market, exemplified in the fact can’t support VMware vMotion.

“We had that capability more than a year ago,” Flynn said, explaining it as the reason it bought IO-Turbine last Fall. “EMC is so rushed that they are coming to market with something that I don’t think has a minimally viable capability set.”

EMC’s GeekFluent confirms in a blog post today that VFCache does not support vMotion.

What does this mean? A VM using VFCache cannot be moved via vMotion while VFCache is active. For the most part, since you’d only use VFCache for your highest-performing VMs, this should cause minimal inconvenience as you’d likely run those VMs on a separate compute-tier or use policies to ensure their access to resources.

Further, Flynn says, EMC does not have the controller technology it needs to keep its Flash costs down. It sources it to a third-party. As a result, Flynn estimates that EMC’s Flash is three to six times more expensive than Fusion-io. That’s why EMC only says its pricing is competitive with Fusion-io.

This is really a story with two different kinds of focus. Fusion-IO is application centric. EMC is seeking to add value to its existing storage arrays.

It is a race to the middle. EMC does need to maintain its margins and give a deeper way to sell its storage-based systems. Gelsinger fully admits that the world will go all Flash. But this is a time of transition. Customers are comfortable with the SAN systems they have but know that they are increasingly deficient to manage a new generation of applications. They trust EMC to deliver that mixed solution.

Fusion-io is the innovator. Their route is directly to the app. But they face the large task of continuing to show they can have the long-term reliability that EMC has developed through years of developing strong customer relationships.

In this week’s Profile Snapshot series, Olson discusses how Cloudera uses the cloud, what every Hadoop startup should know, and how he spent his last vacation (even CEOs need to take a break sometimes!).

How do you use the cloud?

We’re an anomaly in Silicon Valley these days: With “cloud” in our name and cloud applications available all over the place, we own a huge farm of rack-mounted servers housed in a colo. We use it for development and testing of Apache Hadoop and related projects. We can’t ship our software without making certain that it works at scale, so we buy a whole lot of computers.

More constructively, though, we’re big users of Zendesk for our customer support infrastructure, we use both Box and Dropbox for file sharing, our global sales team collaborates on Salesforce and we use Marketo to feed the field. Atlassian is the source of all truth at Cloudera — we couldn’t operate without our wiki and JIRA ticketing systems. And, of course, we hit AWS for all sorts of on-demand stuff.

What are three things every Hadoop startup should know?

One: There’s great money to be made building apps that run on Hadoop, so please do that! We need that innovation to drive business adoption of the platform. Two: Hiring is brutal. Your best bet is to hire great people and teach them Hadoop. Deep Hadoop internals skills are awfully thin on the ground. Three: Cloudera loves you, and our Cloudera Connect program is how we show it, so check it out!

What’s in store for Cloudera in 2012?

Scale!

You’ve leapt at least 2 years ahead of the competition with your vision of Hadoop–what does “balancing the future” mean to you?

It’s pretty clear to me that we’re past the point where Hadoop is interesting standalone technology. A lot of the earliest internet companies that adopted it used it as a massive, and isolated, data storage and compute platform. In the more traditional businesses rolling it out today, though, it gets installed alongside relational databases, existing enterprise applications and all kinds of critical infrastructure.

Hadoop has to play nicely in data centers that look like that. We’ve changed our view — which was, frankly, pretty parochial and Hadoop-centric when we got started almost four years ago — so that we look at the business problems that confront an organization, and the existing investments that the organization has made. We concentrate more on use cases and on integration. The data center is undergoing a pretty radical transformation now, with new data streaming into elastic and cloud infrastructure, ubiquitous virtualization and new platforms like Hadoop for tough problems. We need to help customers make that transition.

He shared his insight at theCube with SiliconANGLE’s John Furrier and Alex Williams (see full interview below).

Schlossangle summed up his hands-on experience with Node.js, which has been rather positive. His engineers discovered that it can help reduce the time it takes to complete projects, and there’s less maintenance required in the long run. He noted that simplicity is one of the major advantages of Node.js, which borrows a lot from JavaScript, and that this aspect is driving a lot of adoption among developers who seek to make their jobs somewhat easier.

The industry veteran said that this very factor can solve a lot of tension between the front-end and backend of IT infrastructure. Schlossangle pointed out that software engineering best practices don’t always encompass how an app runs on an operational level; too often poorly, due to reasons such as tempered office culture and rivalry between different departments. Node.js offers a workaround for this category of broken code, at least to some extent.

Sclossangle expanded on this, discussing the positive points of the Stanford-developed language. Scalability came up first, followed by the ability to run the same code on both the backend and frontend, though only a few companies have implemented this approach so far. Overall, he thinks of Node.js as a young ecosystem that’s likely to stick around, and see handsome growth in the future. It still needs to find a solid direction though, and mobile is a particularly strong candidate because of the way Node.js’s architecture works.

The interview went into second gear after Hoffman provided a quick run-down of his company’s eight-year history. They started out as what he referred to as an infrastructure system software firm, and today they’re among the oldest and biggest players in this market, trailing just behind Amazon. The competition is still intense, and Hoffman thinks Joyent got the lead thanks to the support it gives to its community and the visibility that’s built into the language.

The most recent milestone for the Joyent is the massive $85 million round of funding announced just this week, which was naturally brought up several times throughout the 20-minute chat on theCube.

Later, Hoffman summarized where he thinks Node.js stands in the industry, and where it fits in with all the cloud buzzing going on today. Web-based apps are seeing more adoption in both the consumer and enterprise segments, and server-client apps are turning into real-time “small data” sync peers. Mobile is becoming an even bigger driver, Joyent’s founder added, and demand from mobile workers will drive demand for easily accessible cloud applications.

All these new end points have transformed many networks into a back point/abstraction layer, and this is where Node.js comes in the picture. Hoffman described the open-source programming language his firm is sponsoring as the new platform that runs on top of that layer and helps developers address the market’s demands.

The discussion was then extended to the Node.js ecosystem. It’s constantly expanding thanks to new startups that offer products and service designed for and/or based on the language. Among them is The Node Firm, and, as one Twitter user highlighted, a whole lineup of DevOps tools providers.

SiliconANGLE founder John Furrier interviewed him in theCube this week.

Papaioannu started by noting that the cloud and big data are the two megatrends of this decade, an argument not many industry insiders would disagree with. According to him, Node.js has potential because it connects the dots between these two areas and one of the key drivers behind them, mobile, introducing even more advantages to both consumers and enterprise users.

From here on, the conversation drifted deeper into big data territory. Papaioannu commented on a statement by Hortonworks, saying that half of all the world’s data will be running on Hadoop within five years, pointing out that there’s a lot of innovation being done in this ecosystem right now. This was the topic before the discussion shifted towards Papaioannu’s latest venture, a stealth startup named Continuity. He told SiliconANGLE exclusively that it will be announcing a funding round led by Battery later this week, and that – while the company is not ready to disclose any additional details for the time being – more will be unraveled at GigaOm upcoming Structure conference.

Throughout the rest of the podcast, Papaioannu continued to discuss the general direction big data is heading towards. He put an emphasis on how more and more industries are becoming data driven, such as social media. The tools in this market are today focused on delivering more targeted insight to users, while delivering it more directly to the decision makers.

Launching today, Tailored offers custom recommendations for brides-to-be based on their taste, budget and wedding planning needs. Part of the 500 Startups collective, Tailored represents a well-represented initiative that’s at the bleeding edge of entrepreneurship. In today’s Snapshot Series interview, Morgan discusses her latest launch, the best thing about being a girl in tech, and her secret indulgences.

How does Tailor.co (Tailored) differ from Weddzilla?

Tailored is the only place where brides can find and collect inspiration, browse wedding products selected just for them, create lists of their favorite finds, and share their picks with friends and family, all in one place. Tailored gives brides personalized shopping recommendations based on their taste, budget, and wedding planning needs. Tailored is where content and commerce meet. All items that are shared on Tailored can be purchased. No more gathering ideas for items you like and then having to track down where to go to purchase those items.

The best thing about being a female tech entrepreneur?

Oh… that’s a toughie! Not to sound cheesy, but I love being a female entrepreneur so it’s difficult to narrow it down to what the “best” of being a woman founder is. I love being able to bring a different perspective to the table. As the founder of Tailored.co, I think it is a real asset to be able to understand the mentality of the female user, what her pain points are, what problems we can help solve, and use this insight to learn how we can become invaluable to her during her shopping and wedding planning experience. I also love the idea of being different… I don’t think I fit the stereotype of a what a “tech founder” is supposed to look or be like… and I love that. In my opinion, women entrepreneurs are setting out to change the tech landscape for the better, and I love being a part of it.

Editor’s note: see more on Morgan’s views of females in tech here.

What recent trends have paved the way for Tailor.co’s personalized approach?

Discovery and personalization is what the web is all about. Static directories and traditional storefronts are old school. People want a customized shopping experience that is tailored (pun intended) to them, and to not waste time or energy sifting through hundreds of products or services to the find the one thing they are looking for.

Personalizing a user’s shopping experience online is something that is extremely valuable in the wedding space as wedding shopping is an extremely thoughtful, personal process for brides.

With Tailored and some of your past projects, you have to anticipate users’ needs. What’s “balancing the future” mean to you?

Anticipating users needs is key to building a successful company. If you aren’t anticipating your users needs, someone else will be, and you never want to be caught behind the eight ball. If you want to be able to best anticipate your users needs, just go straight to the source. Watching how your users behave on your site, analyzing which features they use most (or least), and keeping customer service core to your company mission, will ensure that you will always know your audience better than the competition. Industry trends and predictions are helpful, but always make sure that no one knows your users better than you do and anticipating their needs will become second nature.

Let’s get personal!

What’s the view from your office/desk?

We are currently working out of the 500 Startups office in Mountain View and we are on the 12th floor. It’s the tallest building in Mtn. View and we’ve got the whole floor with a 360 view of Silicon Valley. On a clear day, you can see all the way to San Francisco… so I’m not complaining. It’s going to be hard to find an office space that can compete with this once we move our after Demo Day :(

What’s your secret indulgence?

Well, it isn’t that secret but I am obsessed with sushi… and gum. Honestly, I could east sushi every day of my life and go through a pack of gum for desert I also love a good mani/pedi with the latest copy of Us Weekly Mag in my lap.

What’s your go-to host gift?

I would have to go with wine! I don’t think I know anyone who doesn’t like a good glass of red… so I feel like it is a safe bet.

Launched last year, Lookout Labs today releases an interactive app that allows you to zoom through time and watch thousands of sparks light up the globe, each one representing a real person protected by Lookout. The app will allow you to see a plethora of threats identified by Lookout every day, as well as answer generic questions such as: "Are there really mobile threats?" "How many mobile threats are there?" "What are the most common mobile threats?"
Lookout Labs came to life to push the boundaries of mobile, as well as create and launch new mobile products. This resulted in countless of people having recovered their lost mobile devices using Plan B, and we also get the chance to know more about Carrier IQ because of Lookout Labs’ detector app. Continue reading →

Launched last year, Lookout Labs delivers its fourth interactive app that allows you to zoom through time watching thousands of sparks light up the globe, each one representing a real person protected by Lookout. The app will allow you to see the plethora of threats identified by Lookout every day, as well as answer questions that plague today’s mobile user such as: “Are there really mobile threats?” “How many mobile threats are there?” “What are the most common mobile threats?”

The new Mobile Threat Tracker is actually an impressive visualization of the data Lookout already measures, turning its database into a consumer tool. It’s an interesting delivery of intelligence for today’s mobile world, and Lookout’s dedication to Android has been an ongoing beacon for a platform that can’t seem to escape the worst of mobile malware. What makes the Mobile Threat Tracker stand out is its ability to show not only the volume of threats and their regional break down, but a history timeline as well.

Incorporating readily accessible historic data is of growing importance for data analysis and visualization, and with new capabilities within big data trends, we’re seeing historic data being layered into more analysis tools. ”It’s a hugely important aspect to an app like this,” explains Derek Halliday, Lookout’s Senior Security Product Manager. ”You don’t want to trod along and not learn from past trends.

“You can look at what types of malware are happening at what frequencies and what duration–yearly, weekly and daily trends…what are the most popular days and times of the week malware’s being published to marketplaces–it’s integral.”

A fresh look at data

Given the emphasis on data visualization, I found Lookout’s back story on the Mobile Threat Tracker pretty interesting. It actually spawned from the imaginative mind of an intern working at Lookout last summer, and turned out to be a great nexus for all that Lookout represents. It’s a great consumer education tool, an area Lookout’s been keen on given the new era of mobile malware, and it really demonstrates the power of Lookout’s data analysis, which also enables them to predict upcoming threats in order to better protect mobile users. As far as the technology behind the visualization goes, Lookout provides some additional details:

“For the visualization in the Mobile Threat Tracker, we started at the whiteboard to get an idea for what we wanted to build and how it might function on devices with a limited-size screen. We built several prototypes in Processing, which is a programming environment that makes it easy to quickly explore graphics and interactive visuals (processing.org), made some mockups of the final product in Photoshop, and then began to program the app for Android directly.”

Lookout pushes boundaries

Lookout Labs came to life to push the boundaries of mobile, as well as create and launch new mobile products. The result is countless mobile users having recovered their lost mobile devices using apps like Plan B, receiving alerts when there’s a new mobile threat, and gaining useful information about software like the debatable Carrier IQ.

Lookout Mobile Security predicts there will be even more mobile malware in 2012. They pointed out two major drivers for malware writers, along with the type of malware that comes with them. They also identified the most generic missteps people take that endangers their cyber security. Here are some of the biggest mobile security issues in 2011.

Lookout also recently partnered with Telstra for its global expansion. It has also managed to extend its operations to Australia, Canada and the United Kingdom.

“Mobile threats don’t discriminate based on where you are. They tend to be global, affecting people around the world,” said Lookout CEO and co-founder, John Hering. “We are providing a simple way for people to protect their most personal devices. Australia, Canada and the UK will be the first of many countries where Lookout will deliver an adapted experience.”

Appcelerator hired two new executives to head its R&D operations, both of whom have worked over a decade each for software maker Adobe.

Carl Orthlieb is taking over as the new VP of engineering, bringing with him over 25 years of experience in the software industry. Of that time, 17 years were spent working for Adobe, where he served as Senior Director of Server Engineering and Director of Acrobat Engineering prior to his departure. Engineering is the most prominent keyword in Orthlieb’s resume, and extends to the list of executive management roles he fulfilled at CA Technologies and Ariba.

The second latest Appcelerator hire is Jo Ann Buckner, who worked at Adobe for 13 years and contributed to the Creative Suite unit, among other things. Most recently she was appointed as the software maker’s Director of Product Management, Touch Tooling and Creative Cloud.

The third addition to the company’s team is Doug Norton-Bilsby, who will now be spearheading Appcelerator’s EMEA efforts from the newly opened London headquarters, which has yet to have been occupied by a full staff.

“We are thrilled to add these seasoned influencers and executives to Appcelerator’s ranks,” said Jeff Haynie, Appcelerator co-founder and CEO.

“Appcelerator is experiencing 500% annual growth as enterprises look to expand and scale their mobile initiatives. These new team members have vast technology and leadership experience to ensure Appcelerator customers stay ahead of the development curve, enabling businesses to unleash rich mobile apps that transform customer relationships and empower a mobile workforce.”

Appcelerator’s intentions for global expansion were revealed back in November, when it raised $15 million in a Series C funding round. Mayfield Fund, Translink Capital, and Red Hat jumped on the bandwagon, taking their respective seats alongside existing investors eBay. Sierra Ventures, and Storm Ventures.

Europe is going to be a key market for growth for Appcelerator, as it expands its global reach. While the company already had a presence there, reiterating its goals in the tangible sense means opening up an office in London. This will be a good jump-off point for Appcelerator as it works its way through Europe, crafting strategies for expansion into Germany and France among other countries.

Haynie recognizes the differences between the American market and Europe’s, noting the necessity for a finely tuned partnership strategy as Appcelerator deepens its ties in Europe’s vast market.

“We’re going after a region-specific strategy,” Haynie says. ”Certainly Europe’s much more partner driven to get into service customers in France. I think we’ll be heavily partner-focused for growth in Europe. From that standpoint we’ll probably have an initial mix of people over there for sales and support around sales. And we’ll have some services people soon to support partner efforts. We’ll expand training, as we’ve been running training programs in Europe for a year now.”

Extending their ecosystem has been a key strategy for Appcelerator in the states as well, launching several programs geared for developers and customers, as well as an app store. The company’s seen significant success in 2011 as both HTML5 and native app platforms attract developers to the mobile realm. Appcelerator’s ability to offer a full suite of developer tools across the gamut of mobile platforms has helped to grow its developer community and customer base, as well as its employees, which are now 150 strong (up from about 30 at the start of 2011).

Like most TV networks, Scripps Networks has launched programming on mobile devices and tablets. So far, the programmer has found that tablet usage is four to five times that of the other devices. We caught up with Scripps executive Jeff Meyer and he shared insights on what this means and where networks will go next with new media devices, as well as what the mobile market needs from advertising.
