Big news comes from Samsung today at the IFA Electronics Consumer Show at Berlin. It is the launch of Samsung's first tablet; the Galaxy Tab. Its portability is the main value proposition here. With a battery life of 8 hours and handy, small sized 7-inch touchscreen, Galaxy Tab, is promoted as the tablet to use on the go.

The other main features include phone call ability, GPS system, internet connectivity, e-book reader, support for various movie formats, a 1.3 megapixel front camera and a 3 megapixel back camera with LED Lamp. Other specifications are a 1GHz Cortex A8 processor, 16 GB internal memory and 32 GB extend-able MicroSD storage, Galaxy Tab is sure to make some noise in the tablet market.

This product is powered by the latest Android OS offering (Froyo 2.2), and will receive an update for Android GingerBread later this year. This means you can use any killer app off the Android Market--another breakthrough feature for Android-powered tablets. The screen resolution difference from smart phones can cause compatibility issues for some applications, which would be resolved soon.

The price is yet to be disclosed but most probably it would sell with monthly plans and subsidies through operators. As ComputerWorld reports,

Users can connect to the Internet using HSPA (High-Speed Packet Access) at up to 7.2Mbit/sec (download) or 5.76Mbit/sec (upload), or at even higher speeds over 802.11n Wi-Fi networks.

When not surfing the Web, users can watch movies in a number of different formats, including DivX, Xvid, WMV and MPEG-4.The fact that the Tab is based on Android version 2.2 means it also has Adobe Flash 10.1. Other software onboard includes Samsung's TouchWiz 3.0 addition to the Android user interface and Social Hub, an application that collects messages from different social networks in one place. Samsung developed TouchWiz and Social Hub for its smartphones.

The Tab also will come with Hubs for accessing e-books, magazines, newspapers, music and movies. The latter will only be available in the U.S. Samsung will install Layar, an augmented reality application, and Swype, which allows users to input text on a touchscreen by gliding their finger from one letter to another on a virtual keyboard, as well. For users who don't like virtual keyboards, Samsung will also offer a hardware keyboard as an accessory.

This launch comes right after yesterday's announcements from Apple, with a redesigned lineup and other new product offerings, though none were related directly to its iPad tablet. So, there is definitely tough competition awaiting Galaxy Tab. The advantage over other products is mainly the phone capability. The question then arises; how many people would be really willing to replace their phone with a tablet that can also make calls? I think, not many.

Only time will tell how GalaxyTab holds up to the cutthroat competition, but Samsung seems anxious for the challenge. The electronics manufacturer has a good amount of experience working with the Android platform, and its Galaxy S smart phone has been among the top-sellers in the market.

And it looks like it has all the trappings to become the Twitter iPad killer app. From the hands-on article at PCMag,

The free Twitter for iPad app expands the functionality of previous iPhone Twitter clients by introducing "Panes," or fly-out panels that offer a spacious reading experience without blocking your feed. When you tap a tweet, a separate panel slides in from the right side of the screen, which displays a user's most recent update, bio, Web site link, number of followers, the number of people that person follows, and other typical Twitter information.

The app also lists a handful of similar Twitter users who might be worth following. Although Panes take up a sizable portion of on-screen real estate, it's still quite easy to follow the main Twitter feed.

An excellent part of the “Panes” paradigm here also is that they will be media rich, embedding audio, video, and enabling easy conversation navigation.

Aside from the interesting “Panes” concept, Twitter for iPad also follows the gestures paradigm. This allows users to produce finger/mouse gestures across the iPad surface to create actions within the Twitter for iPad interface. Two fingers and down scrolls to other messages in the same conversation and two fingers together spreading apart opens a user bio.

While this may make third-party developers feel a little bit left out (by making Tweetdeck and others look like chumps), if they haven’t been attempting to take advantage of these systems in the iPad, these app developers have definitely fallen behind. Needless to say, hopefully it will spur the third-party app producers to write their own killers.

For now, it looks like Twitter for iPad will carry the day. See Twitter’s own blog post on their product for more information.

Broadcasting live video from your Android phone is now available with Justin.tv. The live, video-streaming service has launched an Android app, bringing the service to Google's mobile platform. Broadcasting live videos has never been so easy with this innovation for mobile phones. Though Justin.tv might not be the first to market (Qik, etc.), it has some advantages in the form of hardware video encoding which enables it to drain less battery power and bitrate adjustment of videos uploaded to strengthen wireless connections.

You can start broadcasting by downloading it on your Android and registering for a Justin.tv account. You will never have to go to a website. It’s easy to use with only three buttons: record, share and chat. Hit record and the video is live on air. You can opt to broadcast the video in landscape and portrait mode, and you can chat live with other users, viewing the broadcast as well. Share the link to Twitter or Facebook to invite more people which will redirect to a saved archive version if ever the broadcast is over.

Justin.tv CEO Michael Seibel believes that mobile apps can eliminate much of the hassle of limited streaming options and can broaden ways live video can be broadcasted. Taking the step towards Android expansion means the company is dedicated to its mobile offerings, which will only increase in interest as quality and capabilities around mobile devices improve. While we're on the topic of Justin.tv, be sure to check out our channel, which is currently streaming TheCUBE live from VMworld 2010.

Starting with atel-Lucent who look to extend their range of mobile applications through an acquisition of OpenPlug through the company’s ELIPS Studio. This product is a developer tool, which allows developers to write an application once and have it translated automatically across multiple platforms.

From the Alcatel-Lucent,

While demand for mobile apps is peaking, so is the fragmentation of mobile development platforms and tools,” said Michael Cote, analyst for Redmonk. “This makes it very expensive to target all devices and can lead to putting all your eggs in one, often tightly controlled basket, like Apple's, or doing a least-common denominator, mobile web app that can't benefit from full native device access. A tool that can target all platforms is hugely needed in this space, and OpenPlug should work well with the total mobile app development portfolio Alcatel-Lucent is putting together."

Thanks to OpenPlug, service providers, enterprises and developers do not have to be selective about which of the many mobile platforms they will write applications for, thus limiting their potential for service adoption and revenue potential. OpenPlug’s mobile software turns every device into a smart device. It allows developers to write applications once and convert application code into native software that runs on any leading mobile device operating system, including iPhone®, Android®, Symbian®, Windows Mobile®, and Linux®.

OpenPlug’s ELIPS Studio makes use of Adobe Flex as a development environment, using ActionScript as its native language. It then compiles the code for the native platform of the phone it’s running on, so perhaps it will use a Just-In-Time compiler much like Java. This means that developers will not be able to use custom development kits, but will be able to take advantage of the features of different phones.

While ELIPS doesn’t currently support the Windows Phone 7, OpenPlug and Alcatel have begun talks with Microsoft.

Also in the mobile acquisitions front, VeriFone has acquired WAY Systems as an inroad into mobile POS technology. From VeriFone,

Over the past five years, WAY has built up a customer base of more than 25,000 mobile merchants who use the company’s compact mobile POS technology and gateway services. VeriFone will immediately take over support of these merchants within its expanding PAYware Connect Gateway infrastructure. Additionally, VeriFone will offer continuous non-stop support for all existing WAY mobile systems, bolstered by VeriFone’s extensive mobile portfolio, including PAYware Mobile and VX Evolution secure payment systems.

Originally a seed company of VeriFone’s founder, Bill Menlton, WAY Systems is coming back into the fold. With them comes a technology that many mobile companies are champing at the bit to become part of—a flow of money from merchants to mobile users. Many different products have hit the market of late but nothing has really taken hold yet, so every mobile producer will want to get in on whatever becomes the next big thing in this department.

If mobile payments could promise both security and ease, many people who own mobile phones—an almost ubiquitous type of “electronic jewelry” now—would probably jump at the chance to stop having to carry a wallet of plastic and do their transactions with their phone.

VeriFone bought WAY Systems for a gross maximum of $9 million dollars--$6 million up front, and $3 million after a year if certain conditions are met.

One such company happens to be Scoreloop who hope to revolutionize the Android social gaming landscape.

Scoreloop’s offering to the market is a sort of social discovery network for Android games. It takes advantage of the microblogging fad built up by Twitter and Facebook to deliver recommendations about games between friends. The need for a framework that embraces multiple different games within the Android platform is becoming more apparent as game families tend to cluster together and don’t play well with others.

With the launch of their app, Scoreloop is reaching out to as many other developers, gaming companies, and the like to enable better cross-promotion and discovery. When we asked CEO Marc Gumpinger about Scoreloop's international expansion, particularly in regards to Android's platform growth. He responded, saying,

"Scoreloop is the #1 social gaming network across mobile platforms - internationally. We started with the iPhone and moved on to the Android market which we now dominate. In the same vein Scoreloop will support and dominate other major smartphone platforms within the coming months. The iPhone sparked a new wave. But the other major players are following. First was Google with Android but now we're talking about BREW, bada, MeeGo, Windows, etc. With huge companies like Intel, Nokia, Qualcomm, Microsoft, and Samsung joining -- the party has just begun.

Scoreloop prepared its products for cross platform support from the beginning on. While others focused just on the iPhone and now have a hard time porting to other platforms, Scoreloop's cross platform support now represents the core USP that will - and actually already has determined the key to success.
We're not interested in the niche market of 100M users on iOS - we're targeting the market of more than 1B mobile end-users."

“While Apple has Game Center, there is no such thing on Android. We're already #1 on Android with millions of users actively using our social gaming features. Market demand was so strong on Android that we now provide the de-facto standard Game Center like app on Android.

With its Facebook-like friend feed that shows what your friends are playing, the Scoreloop App for Android provides end-users with a fun and free way to stay in touch with their friends in a playful way. In a world of thousands of games it also provides end-users an effective means to find other games they might like. For developers the Scoreloop App provides a simple way to cross promote their games - for free.”

With the release of the Scoreloop SDK developers will be able to take further advantage of the social discovery, scoreboard, and networking capabilities of the app. The more Android games that embrace this network will give the current games on the platform a great deal more exposure, produce a friendly competition between friends and strangers, and most likely amplify adoption by other businesses as they see their competitors' reach grow. This is a major area of growth and opportunity, as Millennial Media has pointed out in its July SMART report--games still rank high in the mobile world of revenue-generation.

Launch partners implementing these social discovery features within their games include Boolba Labs, Goodteam Lab, and HyperBees Ltd. and JiuzhangTech.

The massive changes to the service of course warrants a major name change, seeing as the company will no longer be pigeon-holed as a Twitter app.

The new name is Plixi, which I found to be pretty darn cute. Turns out, that was the idea CEO and founder Sean Callahan had behind the name change, as nearly two-thirds of its user base is female (by the way, that's generally becoming the case for several social networking and media-sharing tools, particularly those that interact from a location-based, mobile vantage point).

And what else do girls like to do? Socialize. While TweetPhoto already supported media-sharing outside of Facebook, the name change and expansion has brought on some new features to the Plixi service. You can now share photos based on common friends, places and events, through its website.

One thing that hasn’t changed is Plixi’s focus on API’s and mobile apps. This means Plixi’s iPhone and Android apps will see some updates as well. Expanding past Twitter and taking a more location-based approach to its service means that Plixi’s third party apps will have more options around its sharing mechanisms.

This has been an important area of growth and opportunity for TweetPhoto in the past, and moving forward with the new Plixi service is really setting the company up to become more of a social network. Orienting users around their photos, based on location and common interests, isn’t a new concept, but it is receiving some refreshed interest now that Facebook Places and other initiatives are emerging on the scene.

“We have always been a location-aware service, and now we have enhanced our service to allow sharing around places and events in a new ways. Users can now check in to any place or event with a picture,” said Rodney Rumford, co-founder and head of product management at Plixi. “We imagined a way to collectively capture all the experiences from the same place or event instead of having these memories scattered all over the web,” added Sean Callahan, Plixi co-founder and CEO. “We are going to change the way people share, connect and consume their memories with others.”

With this space beginning to heat up from every perspective you can imagine, Plixi’s re-branding is a necessary step in the longer road towards growth and large-scale success. See here for full feature updates and details on the new Plixi.

Millennial Media’s monthly SMART report has been released today, bringing a few expected trends to the table. Mobile advertising is still on the rise, with discount alerts continuing to be a primary area of focus. There are a few special report sections that Millennial Media has looked at, including male shoppers, and some new metrics the company has added to the mix.

One promising stat is that nearly 20% of smart phone owners took a special trip to a retailer after receiving a mobile coupon. This is some pretty hefty validation of mobile discount alerts, though it should come as no surprise, given the booming success of startups like Groupon, and ongoing funding for similar services.

The rise in action-oriented consumer behavior is encouraging for advertisers and retailers, especially as coupon redemption has typically demonstrated surprisingly low rates. The numbers from Millennial Media indicate that targeted delivery methods through mobile distribution could be lending to more consumer uptake.

Millennial Media also hints towards opportunities around male-centric advertising, saying “advertisers shouldn’t underestimate the buying power of the male shopper this holiday buying season--particularly brands in the Electronics, Clothing, Store, Department Stores and Service locations where males overindexed for coupon usage.” This recommendation comes from July’s numbers showing an increase in male mobile shopper coupon usage.

Other clues for mobile coupon targeting involve the delivery methods consumers prefer, with 28% of survey respondents noting they want to find coupons on their own, using an app. In-store mobile apps received 82% of consumer interest, with doctors’ offices coming in at 55%, sporting events landing 36%, and during a movie or at a theater raking in 17% of consumer preferences. Categories of interest would be Retail & Restaurants, Automotive, Telecom and CPG, with a focus on rich mobile experiences that consumers can relate to.

Millennial Media has also begun to measure application downloads as a metric in its monthly SMART reports, noting a rise in July, for the second consecutive month. Noting the types of apps that were downloaded most by consumers, Millennial Media also highlights the heavily engaging mobile apps as the most used.

Beyond this, July saw a continuation of several trends, including brands utilizing Targeted-Audience campaign methods. Millennial Media’s ad network saw a 2% increase, month-over-month. Still, broad reach methods have taken up 57% of campaign targeting for July, which is still a comfortable area for beginning mobile marketing, as the industry overall is still in its infancy. Resources allocated towards rich mobile marketing has yet to reach the level of other advertising mechanisms for several industries.

Going back to the success of targeted discount ads, however, and you’ll see how Behavioral Audience targeting managed to gain 5% month-over-month, accounting for 17% of targeted ads in July. The verticals utilizing demographic targeting the most were Entertainment and Telecom, which is a continuation of last month’s trends as well.

Wow, this has to be a first. Canada is actually going to get something the same day that my friends in the US get to get their grimey mitts on some new toys.

Yes folks, it is one of those rare moments in time where those of us in Canada who normally have to look on like forgotten relatives as our US counterparts dive in with unboxings and glorious reports of their new shiny objects can actually join in on the fun this time. For it seems that Windows Phone 7 will be launching in both countries on exactly the same day.

This video, via WMPoweruser, is with Microsoft Canada Mobility Solutions Manager Greg Milligan being interviewed by Lazyreviewzzz where Milligan notes:

the Canadian launch will be simultaneous with the US phones, with a line up by LG, HTC and Samsung, available on multiple carriers, unlike it seems the USA. He however also go on to say Dell will be along before the end of the year, with other OEMs to follow in 2011.

Regarding the cost of the phones, as expected they are competitive with other smartphones price-wise, with the phones ranging from $99 to $199 Canadian on the standard 3 year contract there.

Just last week, we posted an info-graphic about Google’s acquisition history. One of the revelations from this graphic happens to be Google’s recent foray into gaming—and while this buy is no exception, it also thrusts them further into the social media market. According to Chris Morrison at Inside Social Games, this could put Google head-to-head with Facebook as he writes,

Google’s gaming interest is obviously with Android. But it’s also reportedly working on a social platform to rival Facebook; Google’s technology plans could be advanced by SocialDeck’s experience in extending the social experience across multiple devices.

With that experience of porting games across multiple devices, they also offer a non-game product called Spark, which provides social networking for players across Blackberry, iPhone, and Facebook. Since social gaming is a huge trend right now (especially among first-time gamers) Google would do well to get in on the rising tide.

SocialDeck also looks like a good acquisition for Google from a gaming perspective as their products have been downloaded almost a million times in 2009. Games that include Shake & Spell, Color Connect and Pet Hero. Among them, Shake & Spell also operates across Blackberry, iPhone, and Facebook.

No news yet on the financial details of the acquisition.

News of the buy came through a letter posted on the front page of the SocialDeck website.

Mobile wireless carriers such as MetroPCS and Verizon will benefit greatly to being the first kids at the finish line on these US projects. It looks like MetroPCS is the stronger runner with plans to turn on LTE networks in Dallas and Las Vegas next month. James Kendrick from GigaOM brings us this scoop,

The Verizon LTE network may go live in November, but the carrier has indicated the first LTE-capable smartphone won’t appear on the network until next year. Samsung has stated that MetroPCS will make the Samsung Craft phone available in September alongside the launch of the LTE network. The Craft is thought to be a smartphone with sliding QWERTY keyboard, and steps down to CDMA when LTE is not available.

LTE 3GPP is a next-generation wireless network that will take advantage of advanced wireless communication technology. While sometimes marketed as really fourth generation (or 4G) is really more like 3.9G because current LTE doesn’t comply with all the 4G standards. It is also important to point out that LTE is not compatible with 3G. Still, even with these standards still shifting, the speeds offered by these services greatly exceed current 3G networks.

Verizon Wireless and AT&T Mobility announced plans, beginning in 2009, to convert their networks to LTE. However, it looks like MetroPCS is poised cut the blue ribbon before anyone else in the US, even if they beat Verizon by only a month.
