The future of the mobile industry is pretty clear- it’s all about data. Data revenues have allowed U.S. carriers to keep subscriber ARPU’s relatively stable in the face of 30% declines in voice revenues over the past five years. Look no further than Verizon Wireless’ recent announcement to allow unlimited Skype-to-Skype voice calls over its 3G network to see the future revenue prospects of voice, now a commodity service.
Data revenues, in contrast, are expected to continue their explosive growth, more than doubling by 2013 according to a recent Telecommunications Industry Association report. It’s no coincidence that over the same period smartphone sales are projected to account for more than 40% of all wireless devices sold domesti

Although "don't be evil" isn't Google's official corporate motto, the company and its admirers have embraced the concept implicitly and explicitly. But pride goeth before a fall, and the buzz around Google isn't just about their new social networking feature: Cynicism and disillusionment with Google is growing. Why Do They Hate Me? Last week I wondered out loud about this: When did everyone get so cynical and disillusioned with Google? It's ironic that answers rolled in on Twitter and FriendFeed even as Google was stomping into their turf with Buzz. What response did I get? Google's corporate censorship moves, especially in China, look pretty evil to some Google's lack of innovation outside search, especially its repeat

iSites is one of a handful of companies that are offering services that let you build iPhone apps quickly in minutes. Ben Parr wrote about this yesterday over at Mashable: iSites, a new service launching today, allows you to take your website’s RSS feed and data and quickly transform it into a full-fledged iPhone app. It was created by Genwi, a service that combines aspects of RSS reader, social network and news filter. The product is very straightforward: For just $25, iSites will create a customized iPhone and Android app for you (note: android apps will publish starting in February). The first step is to add some of your feeds. The primary one should be your blog or an RSS feed, but you can also add your Twitter, Flickr, YouTu

Google's Android cell phones are quickly closing the gap on Apple's iPhone, according to new research from eMarketer. In the fourth quarter, the proportion of potential smartphone buyers who said they were going to purchase an Android jumped from 6% to 21%, surpassing blackberry for the first time, while interest in buying the iPhone dipped. For more details on what the Smartphone wars might look like as Google and Apple continue their ascendancy in the entertainment business, check out my analysis in this week's New Media Minute.

It is CES time again, and this year, Samsung is going all out with several firsts, a lot of ICES Innovation awards (23 actually!), and a commitment to creating the future of home entertainment. Home entertainment continues to get increasingly exciting with slimmer and cooler televisions and blu-ray players, but the basic experience of watching a movie from your couch hasn’t changed much in many years. Not to worry, in 2010, the 3D experience will make its way from theaters to your homes. While the first 3D film premiered back in 1922, the technology that is used today is much more advanced and has finally made in-roads to work with the content Hollyw

You know I had to do a comparison. What tipped the scales for me had to be reading this anti-Android post at TheNextWeb. Since I don't own an iPhone or Android device, maybe I won't get flamed for being a Nokia fan. Let's start with the practical things first shall we? Battery Life = The lowest talk time on the iPhone is 5 hours on 3g. The N1 isn't known but it has a huge 1400mah battery. Is that better? Not really since the iPhone doesn't run more than one app at a time. Prepare to juice back up your multi-tasking Android as soon as you get home. Speed = This counts in a big way. To compare your device to computers, it makes sense to have comparable speed. iPhone 3gs has a smoking ARM Cortex A8 600 MHz, PowerVR SGX graphics setup sque

Google is introducing the Google gPhone or as the official names goes - The Google Nexus One. Engadget has the definitive review while others are chiming in here, here, and here.
Google is playing the open card by forcing fast innovation in a developer focused way - similar to what made Microsoft successful in the 80s and 90s - creating a future benefit incentive or rising tide floats all boats. Apple in dark contrast is taking a completely different approach stay controlled and lead with economic incentives - money - their tide has risen.
And This Means What?
Google Nexus and Android goes beyond a me-too device. Google having its' own phone is strategic. It’s just one piece of the user environment (aka the edge software) that

Before the holidays hit, many of us here at SiliconANGLE excitedly talked about the possibility of a network independent gPhone that was rumored to be called the Nexus-One. After a variety of different confirmations of different types, we all whiled away the time in our respective corners on how we all figured the Nexus One would be a game-changer for the mobile world. See our previous coverage on the Nexus One Predictions 2010: Sean P. Aune’s List Mobile Monday: Mobile App News for Week of December 13th Details of the NexusOne keep leaking out all over the place Mobile Monday: Mobile App News for Week of December 6th Today, the news is that the network of choice for this phone will be T-Mobile, although that’s a

I sat down with Rich Wong Sunday, to talk 2010 tech predictions, and reflect on 2009. He helped fund AdMob as well as a raft of interesting companies as one of the venture capitalists at Accel Partners (Accel Partners, incidentally is one of the biggest investors in Facebook and helped sell AdMob to Google earlier this year). We talked about the real time web, social networking, mobile (Android vs. iPhone), energy, and and what he's seeing happen inside the VC industry. Other things discussed include browser vs. apps on mobile, content curation, real time search, and the coming identity wars between Facebook/Twitter and Google. [Editor’s Note: A number of SiliconANGLE community members, readers and contributors are just too darn busy to sit down to write several hundred words on what last year held for them and what tech trends they see emerging in 2010. As such, I’ve offered to sit down and do a ten minute interview with anyone who feels like they have something to share in the way of 2010 predictions (including you! Join this group and leave a note for me in the forums). Late last week, I had a chance to sit down with Kevin Purcer, the , Director of Interactive Services of Erwin-Penland (a creative agency out of South Carolina). We talked for about ten minutes on the Android platform, online TV Content, augmented reality and social media. Below are
