Google Phone now confirmed to exist; Internet explodes While details are still sketchy at best, it has been confirmed that Google has handed out some sort of phone to its employees. Rumors are flying faster than you can say "Android" that this is the long rumored gPhone (sorry, TechCrunch, but fellow Angler Mark 'Rizzn' Hopkins talked about this phone well before you did), and everything is pointing to it finally being the phone we thought it was.  One minor change is that it won't be called the gPhone, but instead it will be called "Nexus One". Analysts predict 300,000 iPhone apps by the end of 2010 From the "Really, you got paid to make that prediction?" file, comes the one that tells us their will be 300,000 iPhone apps in the App Store by the end of 2010. IDC released its predictions for 2010 (PDF link), and in the mobile arena, they included the following statement: Developer — and application — momentum will continue to shift dramatically to mobile devices. At least as important as the number of mobile devices are the frenzied developer energy and application volume building around mobile platforms — most obviously, but by no means exclusively, around the iPhone. There are now over 100,000 iPhone apps listed on Apple's iTunes store, up from 10,00

Motorola Droid may actually be a series of new Android phones While everyone is getting excited about the new Motorola Droid, it is beginning to appear it is possibly more of a brand name than the name of just one handset. Android is slowly popping up on more and more handsets, and while it was a given that a handset named "Droid" was going to be sporting the Google OS, the surprising news is that it appears it isn't just one handset. According to both Android Central and Engadget, the first phone in the Droid line will be the Droid Eris from Verizon, and it could appear as early as Nov. 6th. However, it was originally believed that Droid was going to only be on Verizon, but MobileCrunch has confirmed there is a version also goin

A Day in the Life of a Palm Pre User

October 12, 2009

It’s been more than 3 months since I first got my hands on the Palm Pre. Yes, I’m technically a blogger, and yes, I received this awesome phone from Palm so stop worrying FTC. As one of 10 winners of the “Real Reviewers Program,” Palm provided me with a Pre (along with an unlimited plan) for 6 months! Palm did not tell me to blog about it, but I can’t help myself. The truth is that I was a believer since the day it was announced and I am totally a fan. Popular Mechanics ranked the Pre as one one of the 10 most brilliant products of 2009 so I don’t think I need to tell you that this phone is amazing. Palm has made some really interesting announcements recently, including the Palm Pixi, the second WebOS device on the roste

Android OS to be number 2 by 2012 according to Gartner Look out Apple and RIM, Google is huffing and puffing at your doors. Currently the Google Android mobile operating system currently has about 2% of the market, but Gartner Inc. is predicting that number could surge as high as 14.5% by 2012. This would place the OS ahead of Apple's iPhone, Microsoft's Windows Mobile and RIM's BlackBerry. This would place it second only to the Symbian OS which currently powers 50% of all phones, but could fall to 39% by 2012. To no great surprise, Gartner is saying that a lot of this success will be due to the number of handsets that Android runs on. By 2012 it is forecast that the Google OS will be appearing on 40 handsets, as opposed to Apple's iPhon

Coming Soon to a Screen Near You: App Store Price Wars

October 6, 2009

A report from Distimo, the independent application analytics company, has revealed that Blackberry mobile apps cost more on average than apps found in the iTunes App Store or Google's Android store.  This is in part due to the $2.99 minimum placed on paid apps in Blackberry's App World, but that in itself renders a debatable point to be made in regards to potential price wars. Is Blackberry being biased towards its customers by having higher prices and a higher minimum price point for paid mobile applications?  While the Blackberry has been touted for years as the ideal business handheld device, the economic ramifications surrounding the ownership of a Blackberry have reflected such expectations towards its customers.  The

Apple denies yet another app from entering the iTunes App Store Apple has found itself in another bit of a controversy with denying entry to the App Store for yet another application. An iPhone and iPod Touch application named iSinglePayer was rejected for being "overtly political" by Apple, and will not be allowed entry into the iTunes App Store.  The application was submitted on Aug. 21st, but the rejection did not appear in the system until Sept. 26th when the developer received a phone call from Apple explaining the situation to him.  He did also request a written version of the rejection, but to date none has been received. The application was an informational app to explain the merits of a single payer insuranc

Millennial Media releases data for August mobile engagement Millennial Media released its monthly SMART report about the engagement of mobile users with advertising supplied by the company. Just like last month, there was a bunch of interesting data, but again the standout had to be the drop of the average session time while the number of pages per session again increased.  Who are these speed reading fiends?  The average session time dropped from five minutes, 10 seconds in July (which was a decrease from June's  five minutes, thirty-eight seconds) to a mere four minutes, fifty-nine seconds; average monthly page views increased from 106 to 111.  Again, people seem to be spending less time, but increasing the number of pages the

iPhone users don't like clicking ads According to one study, mobile users in general, and iPhone owners in particular, don't like clicking on ads inside of their mobile applications. According to Chitika, an Internet advertising company, and not one that does any form of specilization in mobile advertising, mobile users only had a click-thru rate of .48% compared to a rate of .83% for Web users.  This was measured over 92 million impression, of which only 1.3 million, or 1.5%, of those came from mobile devices.  The ads that were displayed in exactly the same format as those displayed on the normal web sites, which leads one to believe, though it is never made clear, that these ads were only shown inside of the web browsers on
