Steve Jobs died yesterday October 5th, 2011. Wow.
I’m truly saddened to learn of Steve’s death. I had the same kind of feeling I had when John Lennon died – how can someone that brilliant and creative die so soon.
I can’t stop thinking about the impact that his death will bring to our community here in Palo Alto and around the world.
Yes, I knew Steve Jobs, but I never had any meaningful professional interaction with Steve other than seeing him around town. I was lucky enough to see Steve and Apple work up close here in Palo Alto and his wife Laurene was an angel investor in my PodTech company in 2005.
It was a honor to just be in the same town as Steve. Our community and the world miss Steve immensely.
To Laurene and their kids, and to my many friends who worked and work directly with Steve at Apple I wanted to pass on my thoughts and prayers.
It’s rare for anyone to see someone who work so hard and love it and to have such a profound impact Steve has had. Those effects have been amazing and will influence many generations to come.
Godspeed Steve.
For all of us – we can do something in memory of Steve. In memory of Steve Jobs let all of us try to do some ‘amazing’ and ‘share’ it with everyone.
RIP Steve Jobs!
Lots of good stories will come out from Silicon Valley over the next few months. I hope to bring them to you here. In the meantime here are some great links to stories from people who had long standing relations with Steve and have shared their thoughts in writing.

Link: John Markoff – Apple’s Visionary Redefined Digital Age
John Markoff has been the NY Times top guy in tech for years. John puts out a definitive piece on Jobs – a masterpiece. Markoff tells a great story about Jobs history, insight into the culture dynamics of the early days, and the influences of the Whole Earth Catalog had on Steve.
Link: Slate Magazine – The Apple Two
I added this story because the Woz story gives insight into Steve’s focus that he talks about in the Stanford commencement video.
Link: Harry McCracken – Steve Jobs, 1955-2011: Mourning Technology’s Great Reinventor
I’ve added Harry because he’s been a geek journalist in my generation who has been following Steve closely and has a relevant perspective (although the Time article is a bit watered down but still very good).
