Google has come up with, yet another feather, to add to their hat. The latest addition to their portfolio would be the “Chrome Web Store”, with an expected launch date in October. This store shall showcase applications, while focusing on online games for the chrome users. The details of this new project were presented at the Game Developer Conference in Europe (GDC Europe), in Germany, by Google game developer advocate Mark DeLoura and Google Chrome developer advocate Michael Mahemoff. They explained to the gamer community, the various features of this platform.

The prominent benefits offered to game developers by Google’s new venture are community functions as (reviews, rating, and bookmarking games), ease of publishing, no approval process, etc. As narrated by PC World,

“Perhaps the most notable part of the announcement is how much revenue share Google expects from its publishers--virtually none, that is. Unlike other content publishers, which can keep as much as 70 percent of the profit, Google is asking only a 5 percent processing fee. Google will also allow free games to be published, but won't allow games with in-game purchases (all payment must be required up-front, and transactions will be made using Google Checkout).”

Some say Google has a secret mission to conquer the world. Seems sort of true as we see them venturing in every field possible. Starting with only on a search engine, Google has developed a very diverse and elaborate portfolio. Experts speculate that there is probably a social network next up in the Google’s pipeline. Well, social network or no social network, Google has certainly made gamers and game developers happy with this new service. Only time will tell if it can meet their expectations.

Google has just released the most recent version of their App Engine product API, version 1.3.6 for Java and Python. The App Engine product offers developers the ability to tap into the power of Google’s cloud storage and computing for queries, storage, task scheduling, and allows them to authenticate users with Google accounts. This release relaxes the storage quota, enhances the image serving capabilities, and adds a multi-client feature.

The other additions may be useful, but really the gem in this release is the hook for multi-tenant Apps as described on the Google App Engine Blog,

We are pleased to announce support for multi-tenancy for applications via the Namespaces API. With multi-tenancy, multiple client organizations (or “tenants”) can all run the same application, segregating data using a unique namespace for each client. This allows you to easily serve the same app to multiple different customers, with each customer seeing their own unique copy of the app. No changes in your code are necessary to use this API--just a little extra configuration. Further, the API is also designed to be very customizable, with hooks into your code that you can control, so you can set up multi-tenancy in any way you choose.

Application developers who use cloud computing services often must program their products to create, configure, and compartment spaces on the services they use for each client they add. This additional feature to the Google App Engine will make that necessity a thing of the past by allowing the developer to simply produce a unique key for each individual client and the App Engine will do the rest of the work for them using that unique identifier.

As noted above, with minimal extra configuration, developers will be able to offer the same application to different clients but each client will only see their own unique copy of the app. This will enable a great deal of code reuse and easy delivery by developers to clients and offload a great deal of the rigmarole of setting up a new environment for each new client from developers to the App Engine instead.

Here’s a few more features highlighted by the Google article as being part of the 1.3.6 release,

Java developers can now use the same app.yaml configuration file that App Engine uses for Python applications instead of appengine-web.xml (if preferred).

You can now pause task queues via the Admin Console interface.

Dashboard graphs in the Admin Console will now begin showing up to 30 days worth of data.

Content-Range headers are now supported with the Blobstore API.

You can also read the release notes for the new App Engine for Java and Python for further information, or just brush up on the Google App Engine itself.

Google is courting major media broadcasters and distributors about becoming parts of its new product, Google TV, but as the broadcast industry is highly conservative about its content, it may be a hard sell. The Google TV product provides a set-top box to deliver web content to the TV (including content produced by the affected industries), but would include a great deal of value-added features to attract viewers. Jessica E. Vacellaro goes into the product, it's unique offering, and it's potential downfall in this technology article,

While Apple Inc., Microsoft Corp. and a range of other companies offer ways to watch some content, like TV shows and movies, over the Web through hardware connected to traditional TVs, Google TV would go further. The Google software aims to play any video that runs anywhere on the Web, from clips on YouTube to full-length TV episodes that media companies distribute on their own sites. That open pipe has some media companies worried that their content will get lost amid a range of Web content, including pirated clips, according to people familiar with the matter.

Google's push could backfire: Some media companies are discussing whether they should take steps to block their Web video from playing on certain devices, which is technically possible.

While television content owners, producers, and broadcasters do have a strong incentive to protect their holdings from up-and-comers, Google has situated themselves in an excellent position to take advantage of combining broadcast television, cable, and the web together. They have a proven track record of creating products that collect vast amounts of data and present them to humans in easily digested formats.

Content owners may want to license products like this for themselves, but pulling from a larger pool of viewers will benefit them more so than it will hurt them to allow their competitors to steal eyeballs from their shows. With products like TiVo and on-demand movies and cable already dominating the landscape, being part of searchable content that can be streamed to viewers’ TVs along with advertisements will probably be a revenue stream difficult for them to turn down.
