Dell Takes on the Personal Cloud with Stage Media Hub Update

Dell announced the release of Stage software update this week, which further enhances the services initially offered. Dell’s Stage makes it easy for users to access music, videos and images among Dell devices.

The Stage update comes with an added feature called the Stage Remote. This feature lets any Stage-enabled device to stream content to another, or even devices that support DNLA technology within the same WiFi network.  It does need to have the devices to be placed in the same room, as long as they are sharing the same WiFi network.

In most cases, users have multiple devices at home and lose track of identifying where the files are placed in which device. The Stage has a SyncUP feature which makes network sharing easier. Users can automatically sync files across supported devices within a WiFi network.

Aside from sharing files from one to device to another, the SyncUP feature through the Dell Stage offers 2GB of free cloud storage. Users with bigger storage needs can also purchase additional storage up to 100GB with annual subscription fees.

The Stage also offers content from Hulu, Bilo, Zinio, and Noisey, as well integration with Facebook and Flickr.

The latest update of the stage is now available as an over-the-air (OTA) update for those who have the older version of the software and pre-installed on selected Dell devices. However, the Stage Remote is not yet pre-installed and must be downloaded separately to tablets through the Android Market or by OTA update for P.

Services Angle

With the explosion of data and the emergence of smart and interconnected devices, it is now a challenge for innovators to offer value. It is becoming much less important as to who offers the most advanced technology.  Rather the emphasis is given more on which technology offers an added value to end users.

Lately, Dell has been slowly shifting its focus from an infrastructure company into a solutions and services company.  Dell’s Stage is a commendable initial step which could lead to more innovative services in the future, all of which fit well with Dell’s devices, creating an extension for its product lineup.
