Update – Flipboard: Look for HTML5 and Web Version Next Year

Yesterday I wrote about Flipboard hiring well-known Web developer Filip Fortes and the expectation that the company will build an HTML5 app and a Web version.

Prior to writing the post, I received a nice email from a Flipboard spokesperson. She said they were big believers in HTML5 but they planned to stay focused on the iPad and an iPhone version.

I was a bit surprised by her response. So I followed up with another question:

Thanks. That’s surprising. I guess there is no intention to move into the Android market?

Late last night she replied. This time she did not insist it was iOS all the time. In fact, her tune had changed quite a bit:

These are all things we’ll look at for next year. Just not part of the active schedule right now.

She was referring to questions about a Web version and an Android app. I think, at this point, we can safely assume that Flipboard will have an Android and Web app in the offering next year.

That’s a good thing for the legions who would just love to see such a beauty on their shiny new Amazon Kindle Fire, Android tablet or on that old-school interface – the Web.

Services Angle

The news, as I said yesterday, is more about the new angle on the app universe. Everyone is making apps. iOS? Very effective. But there are new devices out there that will run HTML5, a sure sign that the world of open standards will have a new life in the next generation of app development.
