Nets Pursue Infamous Record #NBA

Next exit, New Jersey Nets

Next exit, New Jersey Nets

The New Jersey Nets have reached the halfway mark for the 2009-10 NBA season with a record of 3-35. The Nets have managed to make Jersey Shore the second most offensive thing in the Garden State; no small feat by the way.

I repeat, 3-35. Three up, and thirty-five down. A blistering .079 winning percentage. Or as I like to look at it, a .921 losing percentage. When the Nets hit the floor, 92% of the time they are going to walk off a loser. And they’re getting paid for their efforts. These are, allegedly, professional basketball players. They earn their living being able to play basketball at a ridiculously high level. At least that’s the concept.

The NBA record for fewest wins in a season is nine by the 1972-73 Sixers. The Nets are 1.5 games ahead of schedule. They could get hot, and by ‘hot’ I mean start winning more than once a month, and they still would be behind (ahead?) of the Sixers pace.

There is just nothing that is working for the team, outside of Brook Lopez who leads the team in points, rebounds, assists and blocks. Without him, they may still be looking for their first win.

This isn’t just a bad team, it's historically bad. 2-16 at home, 1-19 on the road. Their three wins have come against Chicago, Charlotte and the Knicks, all bad to very bad teams themselves. They lose by an average of 13 points. When they play well, they still lose by double digits.

He should play. It couldn't hurt.

He should play. It couldn't hurt.

The schedule gets brutal through the end of February...for me. Winnable games against Indiana (13-25), two against the LA Clippers (17-20), two against Washington (12-25), two against Detroit (12-25), and one against Philly (12-26), Golden State (11-26), Milwaukee (15-21), and Charlotte (17-19). The Bobcats are like a combination of the Celtics, Lakers and Cavs compared to the other stiffs in that mix.

If they can get to the end of February with only five or six wins, it’s all but signed, sealed and lost.

It’s not early anymore. It isn’t a slow start or a bad stretch. They are atrocious. They may actually be worse than their record.

Give them credit for a couple of things. They have managed to do things that I thought might be impossible. They have managed to put together a more pathetic franchise from top to bottom than the LA Clippers. At least the Clippers have quality young players like Eric Gordon and Blake Griffin. Even with a busted knee, Griffin would be the Nets' best player.

Even more impressive, they are putting together the worst season in NBA history quietly. When the Lions had their 0-16 run, it was national news. When the Tigers made their push for sucking history, the entire sport was riveted. The last few years haven’t been great to Detroit, have they?

No one else may care about the Net players and management, but I do. Stay strong. Keep losing.
