Hall of Famer Carlton Fisk is the man. He obliterated Mark McGwire and other roid users during an interview with the Chicago Tribune.
Fisk said what most right thinking people believe; that McGwire is a full blown liar and an idiot for trying to make the argument that PEDs only helped him stay in the lineup and didn’t help him with statistics.
"[McGwire] says, 'Well, it doesn't help eye-and-hand coordination." Well, of course it does. It allows you more acuity physically and mentally and optically. You are going to be stronger and you are going to be better....That's a crock. There's a reason they call it performance-enhancing drugs. That's what it does -- performance enhancing. You can be good, but it's going to make you better. You can be average, but it is going to make you good.....Try having your knees operated on and catching for 30 years. Do you think you feel good when you go out there? [McGwire] had to stand around and play first base. So excuuuuuse me."
Can we re-induct Fisk into the Hall on the strength of that comment? Not that Fisk’s bluntness is all that shocking. Fisk is the same guy who slugged Deion Sanders in the face for drawing a dollar sign in the batter's box before an at-bat, so he clearly doesn’t like guys who act like jerks.
Understandably, Fisk is bent. He was a Hall of Famer because of toughness, hard work, skill, and good fortune, not because he took drugs to keep him in the lineup every single day. If I were Fisk, or Reggie Jackson, or Goose Gossage, or any Hall of Famer who did it clean, guys like McGwire would make me sick. Not just because of the cheating but because of the arrogance and stupidity of the explanation.
Good work C.
This is the type of talk we need from established stars of the game. Pudge is saying what Hank Aaron have said when Barry Bonds was closing in his record. By doing so, MLB, sports writers, and fans would have been put on notice that Barry's numbers weren't without controversy and support of the man who established the record.
I'm no baseball purist and only watch during the playoffs, but I wish that MLB's hall of famers and future hall of famers would take the same tack of Carlton Fisk and call out their own. That is the only way the issue of PED will be dealt with and ultimately cleaned up.
I'm not a baseball fan, but this whole episode stinks to the high heavens. WHY in God's name is congress (A group of liars if there ever was one) WASTING their valuable time on a baseball player who allegedly lied about taking drugs that may even kill him someday. The country is in the grip of a horrible mess caused by the inattention of politicians for the last 30 years. That boil is getting ready to burst, and here we have Congress trying to "look busy". It's really disgusting. It's impossible for Congress to hold anyone in contempt, because that is the feeling that the entire country has -against THEM!.....
